Joan was born on December 16, 1933 in Buffalo. She graduated from Kenmore Senior High School in 1952 and went on to graduate with a teaching degree from the University of Buffalo. In order to help support her growing family, Joan taught business subjects for several years at Immaculata Academy; a private, Catholic high school for girls in Hamburg, NY.
She was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Ida Guariglia, and her beloved husband of 43 years, Robert Andrew Murphy. She met Bob on a blind date while he was stationed in Buffalo as a member of the US Army, before he also began his career as a teacher. The couple was married on January 16, 1959 at Saints Peter and Paul Church in Williamsville, NY.
Joan and Bob bought a home in West Seneca and raised three adoring children, Paul (Kathy) Murphy, Elaine (Edward) Leppien, and Lynda (Gary) Benker. Joan and Bob preached a family first approach and made numerous personal sacrifices for the benefit of their children.
Joan will be remembered as warm, caring, outgoing and someone who cherished each of her relationships and friendships. She loved to read, travel and garden. For many years, she was an active member of the Orchard Park Garden Club. Joan did a wonderful job of creating many amazing memories for those who knew her.
She is also survived by her sister, Janet Gioia, with whom she was very close; five grandchildren, Laura Murphy, Rachel (Bryce) Milleville, Ryan Murphy, Emily (fiancé Kevin Olewniczak) Leppien and Erin (fiancé Sean Fox) Leppien; and several nieces and nephews.
A private Christian burial will be scheduled.
