She was born May 9, 1931, to Willard Verl Woodhead and Marguerite Hand Woodhead in Midvale, Utah, the oldest of four children.
She was a happy child and a light to all who knew her. She was the student body secretary at Olympus Junior High School. At Granite High School, she served as the Girls League president during her senior year. After graduation from Granite High, she attended the University of Utah where she was involved in Alpha Chi Omega, Lambda Delta Sigma, LDS Institute, and as a Spur in a national service organization.
Barbara then met and dated Richard William Winder. They were married in the Salt lake Temple on January 10, 1951. She and Richard lived on Winder Lane in Granger, Utah where they reared their four children. Her family was the most important thing in her life. She found great joy in gathering her loved ones together, both friends and family, and was a warm and welcoming hostess to all. Her love of beauty and talent for organization was expressed in these activities and in all she did.
She had many Christ-like virtues which were manifested in a lifetime of love and service. In the community, she worked in the PTA, on the National Dairy Council, and as a hostess at the Beehive House. As an active member of the LDS Church, she served in all the ward and stake auxiliaries. She was the National President of Lambda Delta Sigma, a member of the Melchizedek Priesthood MIA Board, a member of the Relief Society General Board, and the Relief Society General President. She served alongside her husband Richard as president of the San Diego Mission, the Czechoslovakia Mission, and the Family and Church History Mission. She accompanied her husband to the Czech Republic as he served as Patriarch there. Barbara served as the Assistant Matron of the Jordan River Temple, the 1st Matron of the rebuilt Nauvoo Temple, and a temple ordinance worker thereafter. Richard and Barbara were an amazing team who supported one another in every service opportunity and leadership calling that came to them.
She is survived by their children, Richard Jr. (Debi Buchanan), Susan (John S.) Tanner, George (Nancy Parker), Robert (Rosanne Barker); sister, Nancy (Nate) Aiken; and brother, David (Marilyn Foster); 15 grandchildren and 25 great- grandchildren.
