

Carl was born and raised in Neola, Utah where he met his beautiful wife, Ruby. They married and moved to SLC where they raised 7 boys.
Carl worked for Beacon Metals installing metal doors for many years. He had his own small construction company fabricating commercial doors and windows before retiring to pursue his hobbies, which included restoring old cars and making jewelry and home projects.
In his earlier years, he enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing. He was gentle and kind. He touched many lives with his humor and wisdom. He was known for making exaggerated car sounds while driving along with his comments, “Put on the brakes man!” or “It’s getting darrrrrrkkk” Carl loved his dog Daisey and enjoyed his Saturday Night Live “highball.”
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved his boys and he was a patient and gentle father, leading by example. He reminded the boys if they borrowed his truck to “keep it under 90”. He is survived by his loving wife Ruby Smithson and children, Edward Smithson and wife Robin of Stockton, UT, Brent Smithson and wife, Patty Smithson of SLC, UT, Phillip Smithson and wife Melanie Smithson, West Jordan, UT, and Dirk Smithson and wife Shila of SLC, UT. He is preceded in death by his children Steven Smithson, Bart Smithson and Ricky Smithson.
He leaves behind 21 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren.
A viewing will take place Monday March 2, 2026 from 5-8:00 pm at Valley View Funeral Home, 4335 W. 4100 S. WVC, UT. And on Tuesday, March 3rd from 1-2:00 pm at Valley View Funeral Home.
Graveside services will be Tuesday March 3, 2026 at 2 pm.
