Greg was born to Royce and Margaret Hansen on August 27, 1945 and grew up in West Valley City, Utah as the eldest of five siblings. He graduated from Granger High School, Utah Technical College and would later go on to graduate with a degree in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix in 1984.
As a young man, Greg spent two years building churches on Indian reservations throughout the country. This time would generate a love of carpentry and taught him many skills.
He married his sweetheart, Bonnie Springer, on April 5, 1968 in Bountiful, Utah and they almost made it to 58 years. Together, Greg and Bonnie raised six children who were and are his pride and joy. Greg had said he lived a life of modest achievement, with his richest reward and greatest satisfaction being “Dad” and later, “Grandpa” to 12 grandchildren.
While Greg’s career took him down varied paths, from computers to sales, his most rewarding work came later in his career when Greg discovered a knack for, and interest in, fire alarm design. He earned his Level IV NICET certification through the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies. He spent 16 years at Firetrol and was instrumental in the implementation of Firetrol’s fire alarm department. After retiring in 2018, Greg continued to design fire suppression systems through his own company, Iron Design. Greg worked on many projects throughout the Salt Lake Valley, including Costco, schools, hospitals and many other commercial projects.
Greg was a handyman and could fix just about anything from broken cars, to broken toys. He designed and built an addition to the house, adding two more rooms and a family room that would serve as backdrop for many family movie nights, magical Christmas mornings and many ‘shows’ put on by the kids.
He was an avid reader and a lover of technology and was always an early-adopter of the latest gadgets, from VCRs to desktop computers. He loved road trips, Seinfeld reruns and beautiful sunny days. He was a gentle, calm presence and will be sorely missed.
Gregory’s faith journey led him to believe in the redemptive power of Jesus Christ and he looked forward to being reunited with loved ones.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Royce and Margaret and his son-in-law, Jeramy Evans. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie; his six children, Launie (Jeffrey) Jonsson; Jamie (Matt) Cowan; Erica Hansen; Adam (Tiffany) Hansen; Pamela (Derek) Cole; and Laura (Sam) Hart. He is also survived by his siblings, Bryant Hansen, Belann Earley, Drew Hansen, Barry Hansen; and his 12 grandkids - Katie & Maggie; Ella & Eva; Victoria; Adam Austin & Violet; Ben & Clara and Emma, Alex & Dexter.
The Hansen family would like to extend their deepest gratitude for the loving care Greg received in his final days from the dedicated team at Highland Care Center, whose commitment and friendship gave Greg a warm and inviting community.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to the Rescue Mission of Salt Lake, a local faith-based non-profit, committed to healing and recovery https://rescuesaltlake.org.
