Gwendolyn Leone Layton Winder, passed away peacefully on her 95th birthday, April 19, 2025, in Taylorsville, Utah. Born April 19, 1930, in Salt Lake City to Howard James Layton and Mary Leone Green Layton, Gwen lived a life of faith, kindness, and devotion to family.
She graduated from East High School and soon after married her sweetheart, Edwin Cannon “Ned” Winder, in the Salt Lake Temple on October 8, 1948. Together, they raised their seven children in Granger, Utah, in a home filled with love, laughter, and the bustle of family life.
A lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Gwen served faithfully in many callings throughout her life. She was especially grateful for the time she and Ned served together as mission leaders in the Florida, Guam, and Australia Adelaide Missions. Later, she devoted many years of service in the Family History Library at Church Headquarters, helping others connect with their ancestors.
Gwen’s love for the Savior was deep and constant. She spoke of Him often and lived in a way that reflected her testimony. Her family will always remember her vivid stories of life along their Dairy Lane in Granger, her gentle humor, her open heart, and her ready, listening ear. She had a gift for making everyone feel valued and loved.
She is survived by her children: Ted (JaNae) Winder, Karen (Roger) Nordgren, Kent (Suzy) Winder, Doug (Gaby) Winder, Janet (Howard) Gurney, Wendy (Bret) Bassett, and Nancy (Brent) Yorgason. Gwen’s posterity includes 37 grandchildren, 116 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren (and counting).
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ned; her parents; her siblings Jean (Wayne) Thornton, Lucille (James) Davidson, and Jay (Eva) Layton; her daughters-in-law Leslie Winder and Sherri Winder and her grandson Isaac Winder.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at 11:00 AM at the Jordan North 2nd Ward, 4270 S. Falcon St., West Valley City, Utah. A viewing will be held Friday evening from 6:00–8:00 PM at Valley View Funeral Home, 4335 West 4100 South, West Valley City and again Saturday morning from 9:30–10:30 AM prior to the services at the church.
