January 30, 1936 - April 15, 2023
Jerry was born in Memphis, Texas to Elmer Lee and Corene Boles Smallwood. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother Larry Lee Smallwood. Survived by: Children: Eddy, Jill (Joy), Judi (Matt), and Stacy (Ken). Grandchildren: Jeremy, Alan (Jordan), Lexie (Joey), Caitlin, Ian (Jacee), Cameron (Madi), Lexi, Talon, and Bryton. Great grandchildren: Isaac and Morgan.
His family moved to Amarillo, at the age of 6, where he attended school. Outside of school Jerry spent all his free time at the Maverick Boys Club where he worked on his basketball skills and met lifelong friends. After high school, he attended Odessa Junior College where he played basketball. After college Jerry moved back to Amarillo to work and married Charlotte Hood having two children, Eddy and Jil. Jerry and Charlotte divorced 10 years later.
In July 1968, Jerry decided to move to Salt Lake City with a lifelong friend where he met Christine Caldwell. They married on January 9, 1971 having two children, Judi and Stacy.
Work: Upon arriving in Salt Lake City in 1968, Jerry immediately went to work for Rocky Mountain Machinery which was later acquired by Komatsu. He continued to work there until he retired on July 31, 2001 some 33 years later. He loved his job and his colleagues developing numerous lifelong relationships.
Jerry’s first love was always basketball. He loved playing when he was younger and enjoyed watching the Utah Jazz, rarely missing a game. He also loved to play golf with his friends and continued playing as his health allowed. Most of all he loved his grandchildren and attending their sporting events including soccer, basketball, lacrosse and football. Always concerned and supportive not only in the sports arena, but in their academic successes. Having high hopes for all of them and encouraging them to be the best possible version of themselves!
The family would also like to express their appreciation to Solstice Hospice Group especially, Olivia, Amy, Clover, Keri, and Stephanie. We all feel blessed and thankful for all that you did to comfort Jerry in his last days and know there are no words to express our gratitude.
