After the death of his wife Jane in 1983 (and the deaths of three sons, John, Ryan and Asher), Dad lived with part of his heart in heaven. Despite such loss—or perhaps because of it—Dad held the gospel of Jesus Christ as unquestionable truth and served for decades in the temple baptistry.
He did not accumulate wealth or prizes in this life, but rather put stock in things he could take along, filling his mind with beautiful ideas: literature, symphonies and opera, film, ballet, all forms of visual arts, and catalogs of edifying knowledge and minutiae.
Dad was by no means a perfect person. He would make a fascinating character study for a novel or movie: complex, unpredictable, and full of contradictions. But we loved him for all his strangeness and texture, and thankfully have each inherited some strangeness of our own.
Dad would be the first to say his greatest life work were his children: John, Georgia, Amber, Ryan, Page, Hubbel, Taliatha, Etienne and Asher. He also loved his 23 grandchildren. Other important people in his life were his dear friend Patricia, his ex-wife Sherri, his children-in-law, his sisters, and other friends and associates.
We will miss him, but know he is where he belongs, with plenty of loved ones to surround and take care of him. We pray that his largeness of spirit, made dim by the cares and pain of this world will find ample room in the eternities to expand to the measure of his creation. This is our prayer with love and hope.
