Marian Joan (JoAnn) Holman Dahl died Thursday, March 3, 2022 following a difficult struggle with the ravages of Alzheimer's disease. At the time of her passing, at her home in West Valley City, Utah, she was surrounded by many members of her family.
She was born September 26, 1936 at her grandparent’s home in Mount Pleasant, Utah to Farril and Luella J. Holman. She was very proud of her Scandinavian/Sanpete heritage. Her name has been a challenge throughout her life. In school and in officialdom she was always Marian, but in the family and with close friends and associates she was JoAnn.
Following a move to the Salt Lake Valley, she attended elementary and junior high school in Union, after which she attended Jordan High School, graduating with the class of 1954. She was a very good student and with the encouragement of her chemistry teacher, Richard Peterson, she enrolled in the University of Utah nursing program where she continued to receive excellent grades. She was affiliated with Alpha Delta Pi sorority while at the university.
In the Spring of 1957, on the evening of the sorority Spring Formal, she affirmatively responded to Richard Dahl’s proposal of marriage and they were married in the Salt Lake Temple on September 9, 1957, which her husband, Richard said was the second luckiest day of his life, the LUCKIEST, he always said, was the day she was born. This year they have been celebrating 65 years together.
Their marriage brought three children: Kathy Mark and Carolyn. The majority of their family life was spent in Granger, now known as West Valley City.
She has devoted her life in discipleship to her Savior, serving largely in the Relief Society and Primary as well as many years of service in the Jordan River Temple baptistery.
Always service oriented, her mantra was, “Is there anything I can do?”
Inspired by her heritage, she also found great pleasure in Family History research. The legacy most tangible to members of her family will be the quilts she made and bestowed on them. They numbered in the hundreds.
She is survived by her husband Richard, her children: Kathy Godfrey, Mark and Elayn Dahl, and Carolyn Crane; 14 grandchildren; 10 in-law grandchildren, and at the time of her passing, there were 19 great grandchildren with one to be born later this year. All were loving and attentive to “Grandma Dahl.”
She was preceded in death by her parents, and all of her siblings who are now happily reunited as a complete family. She was also preceded in death by her two sons-in-law: Frank Godfrey and Michael Crane.
The family wishes to express sincere appreciation to Legacy Rehabilitation Services and Aspire Hospice Services, especially for the tireless care of Janet, Roni and granddaughter-in-law, Lissi, our Guatemalan angel.
