Our beloved aunt and godmother, Shirley Rae Nelson Edwards Baker, age 89, passed away on June 6, 2012, surrounded by family at Care Source Hospice Residence in Salt Lake City, Utah. Shirley was born on November 22, 1922, in Magna, Utah, the 4th daughter of Soren and Sarah Seate Nelson.
She was a graduate of Cyprus High School and lifelong resident of Magna, Utah. A member of the LDS Church, she enjoyed serving and working with the young women’s group. Shirley married William Edwards on January 4, 1944. They were a handsome couple spending 44 wonderful years together until Uncle Bill’s passing in 1988. In September 1991 Shirley married Glenn Ray Baker. They spent 12 happy years of companionship in Magna and Washington, Utah until the passing of Uncle Glenn in September 2003. Shirley would always tell everyone she was so lucky to have been married to two great men.
Shirley had the ability of making everyone feel special. She assured us that no matter the issue, things would always be okay. She delighted in family gatherings where she would share countless stories of her life experiences. She treasured the many friendships of people she met throughout her life. Shirley was an accomplished seamstress, she loved to travel, create beautiful hand knit sweaters, master crossword puzzles and watch sports on TV. She especially liked Ute Football and watching Tiger Woods play golf. Early in her career she was a model in California, she became a licensed beautician, then completed 30 plus years of service at Hercules. She always said the best job she ever had was Retirement! Shirley was a generous, loving and elegant lady who looked forward to her weekly hair appointments, eating out with family and friends, anything chocolate and sleeping in until 10 AM.
Shirley is survived by many caring nieces and nephews and multiple sisters-in law and brothers-in-law. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands William Edwards and Glenn Baker, sisters Audrey Barr, Blanche Harman and Dorothy Howarth, also many sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
The family wishes to acknowledge the tender care from the personnel at Care Source, and Legacy Village Rehabilitation.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, June 9 at 11:00 AM at Valley View Funeral Home, 4335 West 4100 South, West Valley City, Utah with viewing one hour prior to service. Interment will be at Valley View Memorial Park.
