

The youngest of four children, he grew up on the Niagara River and started racing boats that he built with his father and brothers at the age of ten. He graduated from La Salle High School in 1957. He went on to have a successful racing career before joining the Army for three years in the Army Intelligence Division.
After returning from his station in Turkey, he married Lucinda (Pyke) McCombs in 1961. The couple raised four children on Cayuga Island in Niagara Falls, New York before relocating the family to Orange County, California in 1979 as a salesman for a steel products company.
In 1990, Jim and his friend Buck Wall started a material handing company in a spare bedroom and called it McCombs-Wall Inc. The company grew into a multimillion dollar business that still continues today.
He was always quick with a joke and pursued his love of racing with later hobbies that included road racing in Nevada and hot-rod car collecting.
He loved Jazz music and played regularly as a drummer while in high school in clubs around Buffalo N.Y. and while in the U.S. Army.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Cinda, and their children; Jamie, Joel, Laurel and Jason and two cats, Quincy and Ming.
He has seven grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Grace and his three siblings, Charles & Walter McCombs and Janice Aungst. He was 86 when he passed.
A Celebration of Life with Army Military Honors will be held for James on Saturday, July 26, 2025 at 2:30 pm in the Westminster Memorial Park Main Chapel and will conclude there.
