

A proud WWII and Korean War veteran, passed away peacefully at the age of 102, leaving behind a legacy of bravery, resilience, and boundless stories that inspired all who knew him.
Born in 1922, Joe served as a gun crew chief aboard the USS O’Flaherty (DE-340) in the Pacific Theater during World War II, He saw action in the Battle of Iwo Jima, the Battle of Okinawa and the Invasion of the Lingayen Gulf where he heroically shot down a kamikaze. During the Korean War, he served aboard the USS Quincy (CA-71), exemplifying courage and dedication to his country. A witness to history, Joe vividly recalled seeing the wreckage of the Hindenburg the day after its tragic crash in 1937.
In retirement, Joe found joy walking the bike path of Bolsa Chica State Beach, where he became a beloved figure, sharing tales of his extraordinary life with friends and strangers alike. His warmth, humor and storytelling enriched the lives of many.
Joe will now be reunited with his beloved wife of 65 years, Betty Bush, whose memory he cherished deeply. Together again, they leave a legacy of love and devotion that continues to inspire their family and friends.
Joe is survived by his loving family: his daughter, Donna Garlow Hernandez; son, John Bush; grandson, David O’Halloran; granddaughters, Dr. Debra Aspinall and Carrie Ramlow; grandson, Joey Bush; and great-children, Lauren Poston, Caitlin O’Halloran, and Michael Falschlehner.
Joe’s life was a testament to service, perseverance, and the power of human connection. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who had the honor of knowing him. Fair winds and following seas, Gramps. Your stories and spirit live on.
A funeral service for Joseph will be held Friday, January 17, 2025 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Westminster Memorial Park Mortuary, 14801 Beach Blvd, Westminster, CA 92683. Following the funeral service will be a graveside service from 1:00 PM to 1:30 PM at Westminster Memorial Park and Mortuary, 14801 Beach Blvd, Westminster, CA 92683.
