

Mary Ellen May, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, teacher, and friend, passed away on April 29, 2025, at the age of 83. Born on January 30, 1942, in Long Beach, California, Mary lived a life of kindness, grace, and quiet strength that touched the hearts of everyone she met.
She was a proud graduate of Wilson High School and went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Education from California State University, Long Beach. Guided by her passion for children and learning, Mary became an elementary school teacher for the Long Beach Unified School District. She spent the majority of her career as a cherished kindergarten teacher at Cubberley Elementary School, where she was known for her gentle demeanor, loving heart, and inspiring dedication to her students.
Mary met her beloved husband, Ted May, through church, after their mothers—friends themselves—helped arrange a date. Their love blossomed into a beautiful marriage built on shared faith, family, and mutual respect. Together, they raised a blended family full of love and laughter.
She was a simple, sweet, and deeply loving woman. Her warmth and sincerity made her instantly lovable—whether in the classroom, at church, or among family and friends. She had a deep appreciation for nature and especially loved being outdoors. She marveled at Texas thunderstorms, enjoyed watching clouds drift across the sky, and found joy in the songs of birds in her garden.
Mary's faith in Jesus was central to her life. She loved people wholeheartedly, always extending kindness and compassion without hesitation. She had a generous spirit and volunteered her time at the gift shop in Long Beach Memorial Hospital, bringing comfort and cheer to visitors and staff alike.
In her free time, Mary found joy in gardening, bird-watching, traveling, and playing Rummikub with family and friends. She had a special connection with children, and her legacy as a nurturing teacher extended far beyond the classroom. Her quiet wisdom and love left a lasting impression on generations of students, family, and community members.
Mary is preceded in death by her loving husband, Ted May; her father, Charles Collenbaugh; and her mother, Dorothy Collenbaugh.
She is survived by her son, Patrick May; daughter, Sheri Schwab (May), and son-in-law, Matt Schwab; stepson, Jeffery May; stepdaughter, April May; sister, Donna Persson; nephew, Chad Watkins; grandsons, Zachery Thompson and James May; granddaughter, Jianna May; great-granddaughter, Zoey Thompson; great-grandson, Carter Thompson; and her beloved dog, Angel.
Mary Ellen May will be remembered as a woman of deep faith, boundless love, and quiet strength. Her compassion, generosity, and gentle spirit will live on in the hearts of those who knew her. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
