Nam Ngọc Nguyễn passed away on July 21, 2022, just 3 weeks shy of his 75th birthday. He was born to Don Ngọc Nguyễn and Thuyết Thi Luu in Nam Định, Vietnam on August 15, 1947. Nam fought a courageous battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and was surrounded in his final moments by his wife and four children.
In 1970, Nam first met the love of his life, Thi Thị Nguyễn, while she was studying at her mom’s restaurant in Vũng Tàu. He graduated from the United States Navy Officer Candidate School (OCS), Newport, Rhode Island in 1971 and served as a Navy Lieutenant Commander for the Republic of Vietnam. Upon his return to Vietnam, he sailed his Navy ship towards Thi’s home just to wave ‘Hello!’ His ship was so close to shore that it nearly ran aground just to win her attention. It was true love at first sight and they supported each other every step of the way since. Together, they have four beautiful children, Phan, Quỳnh Như, Quan Anh and Quan An.
The simplest pleasures in life brought great happiness to Nam. Since retiring as a California Correctional Police Officer in 2014, he enjoyed traveling the world with his wife and best friends, where he was able to explore his passions for photography and drones. Nam’s love for his six grandchildren, Jolie, Kaitlyn, Ethan, Jacob, Julian and Tyler is so immense that his last wish was to spend a day with everyone together.
Nam’s battle with cancer showed his courage facing life’s challenges with a smile. Despite all the pain, he came through a hero and stayed strong until the end. Nam’s heart continued to beat until each of his children were able to share their last words.
Nam is loved and will be remembered with the following funeral services:
