On December 26 2022, Nellie Stewart departed this world after being in Hospice Care in Huntington Beach, California. On December 12th she had traveled down from Bellevue, WA for a special occasion and Christmas. The week of December 15 Nellie started deteriorating in health. Her family surrounded her and provided hourly care. Nellie finally persuaded God to take her, and she died in the late afternoon.
Nellie was preceded in death by her husband, Archie Stewart, and all eight of her siblings. She leaves behind her son, Bill Stewart and his wife Trish Stewart. There were three grandchildren: Chris Stewart, Kate Sweet, and Caryn Stewart. The great grandkids numbered five: Kayla, Krystal, Katricia, Grady and Ashlee. Additionally there are three great great granddaughters: Reina, Eleanor and Shiloh.
Nellie was born in Tyronza, Arkansas January 28th 1924. While a young girl one of her brothers teased her about marrying a young man (Archie) riding by on a bicycle. That later became a reality. On a trip to Arkansas in May of 2019, she visited the Southern Tenant Farmers Museum in Tyronza. On the wall was a picture of her grandfather in an exhibit. Part of the museum building used to be a service station and soda fountain, where Archie and Nellie dated. They lived in the area for a few years after marrying (1943), and then moved to Greenfield, California. Archie and Nellie had a son in 1946. He was enough. In 1953 they moved to King City, California and six years later to Bradley, California. They would remain there until Archie's death in 1996. Nellie would make her last move in 1996 to Bellevue, Washington to live with her son's family.
In Bellevue, she became part of the family more than she ever realized. There were grandkids, great grandkids, great great grandkids, a cat Winston, a dog Belle Belle and an even bigger one, Duke. Chaos reigned but she helped keep it together.
Nellie will be missed; she had a good 98 years and 11 months (1924-2022).
Services will be private and we ask for no flowers. Please consider donating to St. Jude’s Hospital in her name. That tribute will last for a long time.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.westminstermemorial.net for the Stewart family.
