Cecilia was born on September 2, 1915 to August and Marie (Rorbeck) Melchert in Mount Olive, Illinois. She immigrated to Canada with her parents and younger brother, Ardell in 1919. The first year they were in Canada, they lived with her uncle, Peter Rorbeck, Sr. The following year her dad bought Hudson Bay Land at Edgeworth and built a two room house to which the family moved.
Cecilia attended Querrin School until it burned down in 1927. Classes were taught at the Peter Rorbeck, Sr. farm until a new school at Edgeworth was completed in 1928 where Cecilia completed her education. She remembers Earl McCready as one of her teachers at Querrin School as he became a well known wrestler from the Bures area. After completing her schooling she worked for various families in the area.
In 1938, Cecilia married Lars Sorensen, who had immigrated to Canada from Denmark in 1928. Lars had chosen this area because he had relatives living here namely Peter and Anine Rorbeck. They settled on a farm just west of Edgeworth where they lived for about a year before renting the Martin Wiegler farm, which was located across the road from the Peter Rorbeck farm. Here they were blessed with two sons, Carl and Elmer. In 1947 they bought the Claude Foley farm, north of Bures. This is where they lived and farmed for 35 years before retiring to Ogema in 1982.
Cecilia and Lars were to go to Denmark in 1962, but Cecilia worried herself sick so Lars made the journey by himself. A new house was built on the farm in 1963, the same year that Lars and Cecilia celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1988 with Lars's brothers and their wives from Denmark in attendance. In 1982, they built a new home in Ogema. Cecilia lived there until April of 2007 when health issues made it necessary for her to move to the Bengough Health Centre.
Cecilia, Lars and Elmer and some of their friends went on a few fishing trips. They also travelled to Oliver, BC in 1976 to visit Oline and Art Smith. This was one of two times that Cecilia was outside of Saskatchewan. She also made a few trips to Porcupine Plain to visit with another cousin.
Cecilia enjoyed playing cards, visiting with friends, crocheting, knitting, quilting, sewing and bowling, after she moved into Ogema. When on the farm she had a garden as well as raised chickens and on one ocasion even ducks. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were her pride and joy. She was a member of St. Lukes Luthern Church, Edgeworth and after it moved into Ogema, Lukes Ladies Aid and after it became LWML and the Bures Ladies Aid.
Cecilia passed away on Saturday, August 14, 2010 at the Bengough Health Centre at the age of 94 years
