Glen was predeceased by his parents, Ernest and Jessie (McDougall) Ridgway, brother Jim and sister and brother-in-law Marian and Ron Holland, and great grandson Isaac Ridgway along with many much-loved in-laws.
Glen was in such a hurry to join the world, he was born before the doctor arrived and would say he heard the dogs barking as the doctor drove into the yard. He spent his childhood growing up on the family farm in Avonlea. An RCMP officer at the town detachment, spoke to Glen regarding joining the RCMP which prompted his enlistment at 19 years of age. From Depot, Glen was stationed in several smaller Alberta towns before meeting his beautiful wife Marlene in Red Deer. Due to regulations at the time, he left the RCMP and joined the Calgary City Police before marrying Marlene in November of 1959. Glen and Marlene welcomed their first two children, Kevin and Colleen, in Calgary before moving to the McDougall family farm in Colgate, Saskatchewan, returning to his farming roots in 1966. They welcomed their second daughter, Glenda, in 1968. He built great memories with his family eating supper in the field during harvest, hauling hay, planting potatoes in the garden, baseball in the front yard, and many family trips to stay in touch with their numerous friends & family spread across B.C., Alberta, and Manitoba.
Glen loved travelling and managed to visit many places around the world. These trips were often shared with either family or friends. He especially enjoyed the mountains and called it “God’s Country”. He became an active member of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons and eventually the Order of Eastern Star. He was a member of the church’s Vestry and the local school board. His faith was a very large part of his life, and he taught his family to see the beauty of what God has created in the world around us. He joined the RCMP Veterans Association later in his life and very much enjoyed the friendships he made there.
Glen’s legacy is one of love, laughter and support along with core values of honesty, integrity and respect. He was there when a friend, neighbor or child needed help – a shoulder, a strong back, or well thought out advice. He enjoyed making people laugh right until the end of his life.
Although he is no longer with us, his spirit and the lessons he believed in will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
