Maria Johanna Kievits

Maria Johanna Kievits passed away at Tatagwa View, Weyburn, Saskatchewan on November 21, 2011 at the age of 87. Maria was born June 9, 1924 in Holland. She was the oldest of 5 children, and helped to run the household and raise her 3 sisters and one brother. She completed her grade 12 education, while helping her family survive the war. On August 9, 1951 she married Cornelis Kievits in Driebergen, Holland. They then immigrated to Canada, and settled in Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Maria was a homemaker and devout Catholic, and was involved with the Catholic Women’s League for 35 years. She was a loving mother of four children and fostered many others. Maria enjoyed knitting, cross stitch, sewing, baking and reading. Her family can attest that she was a professional popsicle maker. She loved to travel any place her children moved to, and made numerous trips to Holland. Cornelis and Maria lived a very quiet and fulfilled life in their retirement. Oma will be missed by many for her sense of humor, caring attitude, wonderful baking and mittens in the winter. A Prayer Service was held Thursday, November 24, 2011 from Fletcher Funeral Chapel. A Funeral Mass was held Friday, November 25, 2011 from St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church, Weyburn, Saskatchewan, with Celebrant Father Gerry Bauche. Pallbearers were Jeremy Kievits, Justin Kievits, Joel Kievits, Casey Kievits, Nicholas Kievits and Mike Prochinsky. Interment took place at Green Acres Memorial Gardens, Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Donations in memory of Maria may be made to the Arthritis Society.
