Through searching for Noella, I came across the memorial for the late Mildred Nelson. I stayed on the Nelson farm in 1968-69. During this time I was treated with the utmost respect by the Adolph and Henry Nelson families. That time was a very traumatic year for me and these families made my life worth living. This was a life changing experience for me. For that I am forever grateful. My sincere condolences to Brenda, Shirley, Larry and Noella and families.

What Larry Said About Mother

Cordelia asked me what my strongest memories of my Mom were. My jaw dropped and my mind went blank, but two days later I have a few thoughts to recount.

Mom was first and foremost a school teacher, so our education was important to her. At that time there was no Kindergarten at the new Trossachs School, so when we were 5, she worked at home with us on letters, colors and numbers, and made sure there were interesting kids books on hand.
Mom was a gardener, but some of the plants she liked to work with were rather invasive in nature, such as the rhubarb that took over one end of the garden. Her lilacs also moved into Uncle Adolph’s scrap iron storage near the shop. The Virginia creeper is still flourishing on the trees near the footbridge. 
She kept lots of plants on her two-tier plant table and on many window sills. I recall one incident when there was a family get-together at the farm and some kids and cousins were lined up sleeping on the floor under a window. One kid had a nightmare and flailing his arms, knocked a plant off the windowsill, which hit him on the head and filled his sleeping bag with dirt. I don’t recall quite as many plants on the windowsills after that.
I remember one occasion when she was driving the baler tractor and Dad was stacking the bales behind. He would holler “Left” or “Right”, so she wouldn’t miss the swath with the pick-up. She may have deliberately been doing a bad job of it so she wouldn’t be asked to do it again.
I was always impressed by the way Mom handled her vision handicap. She never mentioned it, and, as kids, we never noticed it. A kid at school once asked me what the deal was with my Mother’s eye. I told him with complete conviction that there was nothing wrong with Mother’s eye, and that was the end of that.
She never drew attention to herself or mentioned any of her health problems to anyone. If there are any whiners or complainers in the congregation today, this is your role model.
Even as her mind faltered in old age, she had many flashes of brilliance. I came to see her at the nursing home once in April. I told her, “It’s still windy out there!” She replied “How can it be still and windy at the same time?”
I see lots of aides and nurses out there in the congregation today, but I’ll tell this story anyway.  The aides were getting her comfortable in her wheel chair and were putting on one of those horseshoe cushions around her neck.  She said loudly “I don’t want that – people will think I am an invalid!”
There are hundreds more memories, of course, and I will never forget all the good things she did for me.

What Noella Said About Mother at the Funeral

It was fitting that it was a Sunday the day Mother died. 

We think she knew that her daughter-in-law Susan came to her room in Tatagwa after she had finished singing in the choir at church last Sunday. 

Together, they listened to hymns Shirley sent for Christmas on the CD player. Mom waited until Larry had finished most of the chores so he could also be with her. 

Then she was called home. 

January takes many people away from us each year. We acknowledge that all of you made a significant effort to be with us, here, IN Weyburn, IN January.

However, I think of warmer days when many of you came to celebrate Mom and Dad’s 20th anniversary at the farm in 1970. It was so much fun we had a repeat performance for their 25th.
Then for their 40th Anniversary, we had a tea in Trossachs School and a dinner in the Weyburn Inn before it flooded on the July 1st weekend in 1990.
We had a comedy re-enactment of farming and school days. 

After Dad died in March of 1993, we staged Mom’s 80th birthday party in 1995. It was the first time someone might have known how old she actually was.
That worked out pretty well, so we had an 85th, and then the LAST big party was her 90th, 5 and half years ago. We had such fun shopping and planning for that party. Thanks to all of you for making that day so special.

Mom left many legacies. She supported me to pursue a career, was the ever-invincible grammar coach, taught the grandchildren to play Flinch, beat EVERYONE at Scrabble, and finally, her care environment in Tatagwa inspired Leah to enter the nursing profession.
I miss my Mom. I miss her visits to Saskatoon. Stephen misses her grating her raw carrots, and peeling all the vegetables at the kitchen counter for large family dinners. Mike and I miss taking her for drives and visits to nieces, nephews and neighbours’ homes.
Mom’s piano sits in our living room as a monument to her love of music and hymn singing. Eric plays it vigorously, Shannon plays it delicately. When she moved into Tatagwa, her theme song became “How Can I Keep From Singing?”
And so we have come full circle, respecting this great life, well-lived. I will keep many happy memories.

As far back as I can recall Mom was always on the move. She would run across the yard to “the other house”, run to answer phones and doorbells, and run upstairs. She was always settled first in the car for church and then had to wait for the family to pile in. I think that it was a few minutes of peaceful retreat for her. That long hallway at Bison Manor was part of Mom’s exercise program, I’m sure. Often I had to speed up to stay with her.

Maybe her feet were attempting to keep pace with her mind! Our mother had so many interests: church groups, libraries, governments of the day, sports (especially swimming), education, CBC radio, knitting, crosswords, singing, and reporting for the local papers; to name just a few. 

But above all, I think that writing was her passion. I have Mom’s diary from 1927, she was 11 years old. She then progressed to submitting short stories for the Assiniboia Times. I have a collection of Mom and Dad’s letters that travelled back and forth from the farm to various rural schools. She wrote poems and skits for her students’ plays and then for the 7 Nelson kids to perform at Trossachs Christmas concerts.

Bless her heart; I think that Mom saved all the letters that the four of us ever wrote to her! Mom also kept in touch with many of her nieces and nephews over the years. If only we could measure the ink that Mom has used!!

In her own quiet manner, Mom encouraged her 11 grandchildren and 4 great grand children to achieve their potential. I know that she was very proud of you all. Follow your grandmother’s example of a life well lived and be an inspiration to those around you.

As Rick, Shirley and I were arriving here last night we were treated to an awesome sunset. My childhood memories greeted me. Those spectacular colors always prompted us to call out in amazement “Look: the angels are out!”

I felt that another angel had been added to that sunset.

My mother was a remarkable woman in so many ways.  I would like to share a few thoughts and memories from a daughter's perspective.   Mom was one of the most patient persons I have ever known.  She rarely yelled at us unless we were climbing up on the house roof.  Often she had to intervene to split up one of the many fights among her rambunctious kids, but she wasn't entirely a passivist.  Once when I ran in to tell her that Larry had kicked me in the shin, she said, "just kick him back."  She taught us to be honest, fair-minded, studious and to take responsibility for our actions. She was a model for the behaviours she expected in her children, and would not ask us to do anything she was not prepared to do herself.  She was a lover of poetry and made us memorize poems and Bible verses, many of which I remember to this day.  She loved to write and encouraged us to do so as well.  She used to prefer letters to phonecalls, perhaps because she could re-read and treasure them for years. She also was a strong advocate of reading, and an active supporter of the provincial libraries.  Long after I could read for myself, I would still ask her to read to me anyway, as I found nothing more comforting than the sound of her voice to lull me into dreamland.  And now, my dearest mother, if you could hear my voice, I would like to read to you your favourite poems and Bible verses to lull you into your eternal sleep.

Aunt Mildred's life touched mine in many ways over the years.  Her home was a welcome refuge in my early years when I needed to escape a sibling or an unwelcome chore.  John, Flora and I were welcomed unconditionally by Auntie.  Sometimes I would switch places with Shirley or Noella at mealtimes when Auntie's menu looked preferable to my Mom's.  My recipe box is sprinkled with recipes I got from her, such as gingerbread, brown rice and 'Other House Oatmeal Cookies' which have remained mainstays in my kitchen since I left home.  
    When Auntie downsized from Elm Crescent, I received many interesting items including half of a tablecloth I had brought from Germany in 1975.  The other half graced a small table in her Bison Manor apartment.  Seldom did a visit end there without a gift from Auntie of varied items she wanted me to take.  Flora has remarked on her generosity in this respect as well.  
   It was wonderful to see Aunt Mildred enjoy life well into her later years.  She will be missed by many of us, but we have our treasured memories of her long life among us.

I so remember our times at the farm at Trossachs..when we got there there were then 9 of us kids running around.  What a blast..every Easter in the mud.  The swimming lessons we took at the Trossachs dam, complete with leeches were also part of our summer routine.  Aunty Mildred was the last of her generation of Broad's and she will be missed.  Love you Aunty Mildred and take care to all of you family out there.

Our condolences to all the Nelson family.  We enjoyed renewing acquaintances with many of you when we attended Auntie Mildred's 90th birthday in Weyburn.  As a youngster, I remember spending many Easters with my Nelson relatives -- always an enjoyable time!  May your many cherished memories bring you comfort.

I would like to extend my sincere condolences to all my Nelson cousins and their families.  My Auntie Mildred was a quiet mover and a shaker.  Auntie Mildred was a loving big sister to my mother and  the maid of honor at her wedding.  I remember fondly the Sundays and summers that we shared.  Mom, Auntie Mary and Auntie Mildred (many times with other siblings  present) always had stories to regale us kids with while we lingered in her kitchen or picnicked at the farm in Trossachs.  They would entertain us with the  energetic antics of the of young women coming of age during the dirty thirties and making the best out of the bad years during the War and the importance of family (sisters), a good sense of humor, and a strong moral sense of right and wrong.   The tea parties that she shared with my children have given them a glimpse into my mother's family and I am grateful for that.  It is sad to think that with her passing is the end of her knitted scarves,  last of her funny stories,  and the last of the Broad sisters.  She truly embodied all that was good in that generation of women.  I miss her.

As you gather to grieve and share memories, please know that our hearts are with you.  We send our love and support.  Aunt Mildred has such a wonderful family.  We pray that you will find comfort and support in each other.  We loved and admired aunt Mildred, and we will always treasure our memories of her.  God bless all of you.

I remember the first time I met Mrs. Nelson at the family farm.  I was struck by her immeasurable generosity and welcoming nature.  I will always smile when I remember her in her kitchen serving up wonderful snacks to us on our many visits to "the farm"!

I remember when I was little about three Great Grandma sat me down and showed me how to knit I loved every moment of time I got to spend with her doing little things like that.

Mildred loved the simple pleasures of life.  It was apparent in everything she did.  Our favorite story of Mildred took place at a visit to Weyburn about ten years ago.  We had tea with Mildred one afternoon and mentioned that we were going to see the Weyburn Beavers Baseball Team play that night.  To our surprise, Mildred requested to come along with us.  Of course we said yes and she was ready at game time.  We picked her up, thinking she may last a few innings and then want to go home.  But no, not Mildred!! She stayed to the last pitch and it was a long game (I believe it went extra innings!) on a cool summer night. That experience of watching her so enjoy the game has always stayed with me.  It taught me that you are never too old to find enjoyment in what life presents to you that day. Live in the moment and take joy in those simple pleasures that come your way. Thank you Mildred for reinforcing that truth!
Mildred was an admirable woman and I feel ever so blessed to have known her.
