Muriel May Dann passed away on Tuesday January 3rd at the age of 99 years at the Weyburn Special Care Home. She was predeceased by her husband, Bill and children Pamela and Garnet as well as her beloved brothers, Norman and Joffre Botterill and beloved sister, Edna Kyle.
Muriel leaves to mourn many family and friends too numerous to mention them all. Muriel was born April 5, 1923 on the home quarter to parents Harry and Alice Botterill.
She attended Fairfield Rural School and the school was on the home quarter, on land donated for that purpose by her grandfather, Edward. Muriel met the love of her life, Bill Dann and they married. Together they started their farming career near Corning Saskatchewan. Bill and Muriel spent many winters living in Regina Saskatchewan and eventually moved off the farm and moved to Weyburn. It was also very special that Muriel’s brother Joffre Botterill married Bill’s sister Dorothy, the four of them had many special times together. Muriel shared many funny stories of their courting together, especially at the small-town dances where they had lots of fun.
Muriel loved living on the farm and had a passion for helping others. She had a deep love for animals, especially cats and dogs. Muriel also loved music, especially Hawaiian music and she often talked about going to Hawaii someday. We know she is in paradise now. If you knew Muriel you also would know how she loved color, especially purple and orange. Muriel was a kind person who touched the lives of many people. She loved gatherings like country barbeques and Christmas celebrations. She was a great cook and filled her home with lots of people to enjoy cards and lots of laughs.
Muriel was always a devoted wife to Bill, especially when he went into the nursing home for many years. Muriel was there to see Bill everyday in the nursing home so they could be together. They had one of the best marriages one could ever imagine, that was full of love, patience, and kindness to one another. Bill and Muriel opened their home to many people, and they loved entertaining.
Muriel would always hand out the best Halloween treats in the neighbourhood and the kids would always remember her. She also had many visitors in the nursing home, and loved receiving company. She always greeted her visitors with a warm and open heart and wanted them to stay longer.
The staff in the nursing home also loved Muriel very much and they cared for her very well and treated her with compassion and kindness When she passed away at the nursing home many staff came to her bedside in tears and to say their goodbyes. The day before she passed, she told one of the nurses at the Weyburn Special Care Home she had a good life, but she didn’t think she would make it to her 100th birthday in just a few more months, she even told the nurse her when her birthday was.
Muriel always amazed many people throughout and at the very end of her life. She loved to read and was especially interested in the life of Queen Elizabeth. Muriel was saddened by her passing. She read many articles about the Queen and enjoyed talking about her memory of the Queen’s life. LIFE magazine was one of her favorite magazines. She would talk about how the English loved their tea with cream that you need to put in the fancy teacup before the water, just as her English mother used to do.
Do not think of her as gone away, her journey has just begun; life holds so many facets – this earth is only one. Just think of her as resting from the sorrows and the tears in a place of warmth and comfort where there are no days and years. Think how she must be wishing that we could know, today, how nothing but our sadness can really pass away, and think of her as living in the many hearts she touched – way too many folks to mention – for nothing loved is ever lost – and she was loved so much. We will miss you dear Muriel. Now you are comforted in the arms of Jesus with Bill, Pamela, Garnet, your parents, Norman, Edna, and Joffre. Rest in peace.
A special thank you to the staff at the Weyburn Special Care Home, Hill Top Manor, Pastor Victoria Mwamasika and Fletcher Funeral Chapel.
