Mr. Walter Norman Nelson

On Thursday, March 11, 2010, Walter Norman Nelson passed away at the Fillmore Health Centre at the age of 87 years. Walter was predeceased by his parents, Nick and Asta Nelson, brother Melvin Nelson and by his wife Marguerite.

He is survived by his daughter, Sandra (Don) Dobson and their children, Arron (Ruth) and children, Emily & Elizabeth of Neepawa, MB and Christopher (Tara) and children, Conner & Tyler of Killarney, MB; two sisters, Violet Hart of Weyburn, SK and Alice Myers of Regina, SK, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Walter Norman Nelson was born October 2nd, 1922 at the family farm near Talmage, Sask. He completed his grade 10 at Wheaton School located a few miles north of the farm. Walter was raised on the family farm and was taught a disciplined work ethic as a youngster. He worked his early years on the farm with his Dad until the age of 20 when he ventured out to British Columbia and got work with logging crews. It was here that he saved enough money to purchase the farm from his parents. He married Marguerite Hart on November 4th, 1947 in Weyburn by a justice of the peace. They spent six months living in Vancouver before coming back to the farm. They lived on the farm until 1965 at which time they built a house in Fillmore. Walter enjoyed farming with Marguerite by his side until her untimely passing in 1974. He rented out his land in 1974 but maintained a keen interest in what was happening in the farming community until his passing. Walter and Marguerite enjoyed travelling, making several trips out west to visit family and also spent several winters down south. Walter enjoyed curling, and hunting and fishing in the great outdoors. He lived in his home until 2003 when he moved into Fillmore Health Centre. Walter was a quiet man, unassuming in nature. He enjoyed company but valued his own space and independence. He enjoyed joking with the staff at the Fillmore Health Centre and appreciated all their care and assistance over the seven years he lived there.
