Albert L. Henderson Sr. passed away in his home on Sunday September 4, 2011, surrounded by his family and friends. Albert was 81 years old and left behind his wife of 60 years Arlene (Glaser) and their four Children Albert Jr., Rodney (Ruth), Leland (Cindy) and Thomas, 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Albert was born in Ainsworth Nebraska on April 27, 1930 into a family of 13. After graduating from high school Albert went to work for the U.S. Geological survey for several years until deciding to go to School at the Junior College in Norfolk Nebraska. While attending he worked at the Healey Drugstore where he met his future wife Arlene who worked behind the soda fountain. After they were married, he decided to work for JC Penney’s as a salesman. This turned out to be his calling with his love of people, personable nature and his knack for telling a good story.
After working for JC Penney’s for a number of years and a transfer to Hastings, Nebraska, Al decided to move to Denver, Colorado and take a job with Sears along with several of his colleagues in 1954. Albert worked for Sears for 28 years and sold or managed in Men’s wear, automotive, home improvements. His favorite position was as an audiologist where he worked until he retired in 1987. He then worked for Dahlberg where he continued to work as an audiologist until his second retirement in 1992.
In his early years, Al loved to hunt deer, elk and pheasant. Later in life he spent many hours fishing in the reservoirs in Colorado and Nebraska until buying a vacation home on Lake McConaughy. Many happy times were spent up at “The Lake” with his family fishing, boating and water skiing.
Al is also known for his cooking. He would make large pots of stew, chili, chicken soup or bean soup. Whatever was left (which was usually a gallon or two) was put in mason jars and liberally handed out to family and friends to enjoy at home. His homemade biscuits and gravy will be sorely missed by his grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Albert would not hesitate to help his family, friends or soon to be friends. His generosity was extended in many ways but usually always involved some sort of action: fixing a car, repairing a sink, selling a car, fixing a porch or any other kind of handyman job that needed done.
Al’s concept of family was broad. Although he only had four son’s, many of his nieces and nephews grew very close to him and thought of him as a second father. To many of his nieces and nephews and their kids he was known as the generous “Uncle Albie“.
Al was always quick with a good joke. Al had a keen sense of humor and no one was exempt. It was not uncommon to see a twinkle in his eye which meant he was going to pull something or already had and was waiting for the laughter.
Albert will be missed by his family and friends and all that came in contact with him.
Visitation will be from 5-7pm on Thurs. with services at 3:00pm on Fri., both at Crown Hill Mortuary with burial to follow.
