He was born Moises Pacheco on June 19, 1938, in Ocate, New Mexico, to Jose Samuel Pacheco and Rosa Fernandez. On September 18, 1938, he was baptized and received the name Alfonso, with Eduardo Pacheco and Petra Garcia serving as his sponsors.
Alfonso's early education took him across his home state of New Mexico. He began his schooling in Cimarron in 1944 before his family moved to Wagon Mound in 1946. Returning to Cimarron in 1950, he continued his studies there until his graduation in 1957. The following year, on December 26, 1958, Alfonso married his devoted wife, Juanita “Jennie” Chavez.
Alfonso’s strong work ethic was evident from a remarkably young age. By the time he was just nine years old, he was already waking early to milk cows before school. Recognizing his dedication, his father helped him purchase a horse so he could take on additional ranch duties. As a young man, he continued to take on new responsibilities, eventually running the local theater in Cimarron.
Driven by a deep desire to provide new opportunities for his growing family, Alfonso relocated to California before eventually settling in Denver. It was there he found his calling and built a lasting career as a meat cutter. His strong character and natural leadership were quickly recognized by his peers, leading to an invitation to serve as a union representative for his fellow meat cutters—a proud role he held until his retirement.
Alfonso was a highly respected figure throughout the Denver community. He was a steadfast advocate for workers, frequently supporting and advising local politicians on critical issues impacting the union. Faith and fellowship were also central to his life; he and Jennie were active and well-known parishioners at St. Cajetan’s and, later, the Church of All Saints.
Above all, Alfonso will be remembered for his boundless generosity. His door was always open, and he was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. His legacy of hard work, advocacy, and profound kindness will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Alfonso was preceded in death by his sons, Michael Pacheco and Melvin Pacheco, and his grandson, Christopher Pacheco.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jennie Pacheco; his daughter, Patricia (Fred) Alirez; his grandchildren, Jonathan (ReAnna) Alirez, Jeannene (Andrew) Alirez, Timothy Pacheco, Larissa (Isaiah) Pacheco, Matthew (Lynelle) Pacheco, Jared Pacheco, and Caitlyn Pacheco; and his great-grandchildren, Elijah, Angelina, Annalia, Jocelyne, Penelope, Nayeli, Diego, Winter, Matthew, and Lylah.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at the Church of All Saints (2559 S Federal Blvd, Denver, CO 80219). Visitation will be held at 9:30am followed by a recitation of the rosary at 10:00am. Funeral Mass will start at 10:30am at the same location. A reception will follow the mass.
Al will be laid to rest at Olinger Crown Hill Cemetery (7777 West 29th Ave, Wheat Ridge, CO 80033) on April 29, 2026 at 2:00pm.
