The Bloomquist family moved to Littleton, Colorado when Charlie was in elementary school. He was a proud graduate of Arapahoe High School and the Colorado School of Mines. As a young man Charlie was a passionate biker, traveling by motorcycle from Colorado to Alaska to work on a drilling rig north of the Arctic Circle. He worked internationally as an engineer in the oil and gas industry for most of his career. Soon after his marriage to Susie, they lived for two years in South Sumatra, Indonesia, taking in all the culture and challenges associated with living abroad as expatriates. After their return, Charlie and Susie started their family and were blessed with their daughter, Jana, and son, Don.
Charlie was gifted in his ability to connect with so many. He had a quick wit, an edgy sense of humor, and was an enthralling storyteller. He was a character; smart, funny, adventurous, rebellious, enterprising, and independent. He made an impression everywhere he went. Underneath his gruff exterior was a generous soul who believed that everyone deserved a fair shot and a leg up. If he knew of someone in need, he would find a way to help them. Charlie was supportive of his friends and family, always telling them, ”I’m waving your flag.”
Above all, family was the most important thing to Charlie. Sharing a meal with those he loved was the highlight of any day.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Susie; son Don, daughter Jana Bramwell and her husband Ryan, grandson Gunnar; as well as his sisters Susan B. Bloomquist and nephew David, Judy Ostenaa and her husband Dean, niece Kelsey; sister-in-law Judith Singleton, niece Marisa and her spouse Megan; as well as many cousins.
In lieu of flowers, Charlie’s family has started a fund to collect donations towards a memorial bench at Union Square Park, in Lakewood. Charlie was instrumental in making this park a reality for the community. All additional funds will be donated to Step Denver, an organization devoted to helping men in need rebuild their lives through sobriety, work and accountability.
