Chuck was born in Denver, Colorado on June 16, 1927, son of John Ellsworth Brewer and Genevieve Andreen Brewer and elder brother to Dorothy Jean Lowe (nee Brewer). He graduated from Denver’s South High School and enlisted in the US Army prior to his graduation in1944. He was stationed in Seattle, Washington and in Tokyo, Japan during and immediately after WW II. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Denver, where he later met the love of his life, Fay Elizabeth (Beth) Brewer at a ski club meeting. They were married in Denver on December 8, 1951, and went on a skiing honeymoon in Steamboat Springs and Alta, Utah. They had two children, Barbara in 1954, and Jerome Curtis (Curt) Brewer in 1956.
Chuck was a dealer-owner of a Standard Oil service station business located on South Sheridan Street until his retirement. Chuck joined Denver’s Palestine Masonic Lodge in 1960 and became Master of the Lodge in 1968. He remained active in the organization and later joined the Shriners, where he repaired donated cars for resale to support Shriner charities. Chuck and Beth lived in the Denver area until they moved to Etowah, North Carolina in 1990 and then to Boulder, Colorado in 2004. Chuck easily made friends everywhere he lived. Chuck and Beth were married 62 years, until Beth’s death in 2013 from Alzheimer’s Disease. Chuck continued to love Beth with all his heart until his death.
Chuck loved the mountains and natural wonders. He was happiest fishing, exploring, driving, camping, and relaxing in the mountains with his family. The family took many long driving vacations, visiting National and state parks across the western US and Canada. Chuck and Beth continued their love of travel throughout their lives together. Chuck was an avid Broncos fan and held season tickets from the AFL days to the Elway era. Chuck was wicked smart and excelled at playing card games and Scrabble, working crossword puzzles, and taking beautiful photos in the days before cameras did all the work. Chuck hated broccoli and asking for directions.
Chuck is survived by children Barbara Shew (David Shew) of Cary, NC and Curt Brewer (Tammy) of Arvada, CO, grandchildren Charles (Charlie) Shew (Alison Shew) of Raleigh, NC and Abby Brewer of Arvada, great-grandson Henry Shew of Raleigh, NC, and many nieces and nephews and their children.
