He joined the Navy in 1951, briefly, before being medically discharged.
Don was a creative man. He first started with wood working then model trains and panorama displays. He pieced together several community quilt tops before his eye sight got the better of him. He then transitioned to coloring with the use of a large magnifying glass making beautiful creations. He was very proud of his coloring that he'd often display them on his door and make copies for the residences at the assisted living.
But through everything, Jesus was the most important part of his life. He always found a way to bring the Lord into the subject of every conversation. He was always a follower of the Lord, but in his late 60's, encouraged by his wife Peggy, he attended an online course to become a Pastor. He pastored at San Marino Retirement Community for 20 years. In the late 80's, he worked for Olinger as a driver and was even called to do a few services.
Don is survived by his daughters, Terry (Tom) Gonzales and Cari (Ted) Batch; grandchildren Troy Gonzales, Michael Batch, Danielle (Jessie) Batch, and Garrett (Sydney) Batch; great grandchildren Rosa Demos, Trinity Slaven, Benjamin Slaven, Charlie Ortega, Colbie Ortega, and Lybbie Ortega.
Don is preceded in death by his wife Peggy, grandson Tommy Gonzales and great granddaughter Maria Gonzales.
A memorial service for Don will take place on Monday, December 14th at 1:30 PM in the Pavilion of Reflections at Olinger Crown Hill Mortuary.
