Doris Audrey Hammer, 83, went to be with the Lord on March 8, 2015. Doris is the beloved mother of Vicki Wambolt (Greg), Nick Hammer (Kellie), and Kathy Jones (Mark). Doris was preceded in death by her husband Howard and grandson, Dustin Wambolt. Doris has 6 other grandchildren: Dan Clark, Lisa Wambolt, Cole Hammer, Logan Hammer, Brady Jones, and Ryan Jones.
Doris was born on November 25, 1931 in Liscomb, Iowa to Jethro and Louise Thurber. She had an older sister, Dorothy and a younger sister, Miriam. They lived on their farm in Liscomb until they eventually moved into town.
Doris attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa where she earned a two-year teaching diploma and graduated in 1951. Doris taught school at Liscomb Elementary. She met her future husband, Howard at a diner in Union, Iowa. They were married at her parent’s home on June 5, 1953.
In 1958, Doris and Howard moved to Colorado.
Doris was the ultimate mother and grandma! She was a homemaker and did some part time work while her children were young. She was active in the PTA, and a deaconess at First Baptist Church of Lakewood. Doris was an excellent cook and taught her daughters Vicki and Kathy, and her daughter-in-law Kellie some great recipes. She baked cookies with all of the grandkids and loved to attend their school and sports activities. She loved nothing more than to spend time with her kids and grandkids!
After the children became older, Doris worked at several administrative positions and eventually retired from the Federal Government after a successful career in 1996.
Doris was known by her family and friends as a faithful woman of Christ and a loving, caring and funny individual. She will be missed by many but is seeing the beauty of Heaven and enjoying the reunion with Howard, Dustin, Dorothy, Miriam, her parents and other loved ones.
