Earl Gilbert

Born June 1, 1916 in Aspen, Colorado to John and M. Evelyn (Woon) Gilbert. Passed away October, 25, 2010, after a courageous battle with leukemia. Survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Virginia (Norman Hinman); by son, Norman D. Hinman PhD. of Centennial, CO, and his daughters Lindy, Washington DC, Erica (John MD) Benson, Seattle, WA; by daughter, Sherilyn Anderson Tan (David Tan), of Seattle, WA, and her children Natalie, Claire and Trevor, and David’s children, Alexander of University of California, Berkeley, CA, and Gabriela of Sacramento, CA. By Richard K. Gilbert (Vivian Watkins Gilbert), Centennial, CO, predeceased by brother, Ralph E. Gilbert (Ruth Rice Gilbert, deceased), five nieces and one nephew. Family activities included hiking, skiing, dancing, and travel to Europe, Mexico, Canada, and all fifty states.

Earl had a continuous interest in and love for his children and grandchildren. He contributed financially through the years to their college/university education. As a boy, Earl enlisted in Olingers Highlanders, ending as first chair trombone in Concert Band and Band Gold Medal. He continued his music in University bands and orchestras, and Denver Civic Symphony Orchestras. Earl graduated from the University of Denver, Bachelor 1937, Masters and Doctorate 1964. Was employed by Mountain Bell (since US West and Qwest) July 1, 1937 retired forty-two years later. During World War 11, Earl volunteered as a Private in the US Army retiring from the US Air Force as a Colonel June 1, 1976.

Earl was an active member of Happy Canyon Optimist Club and served as President. He was an active member of Washington Park United Methodist Church, where he served in many leadership positions and was a choir member for forty years.

A memorial service will be held at the Olinger Crown Hill Pavilion of Reflections, 7777 W. 29th Ave (at Wadsworth) on Friday, November 26, at 2:00 PM.
