

Gordon L. “Lee” Stone. August 19, 1935 to June 9, 2010. Lee Stone died of complications of COPD on Wednesday, June 9. He passed away peacefully, with his family, at Lutheran Hospice. He was born in Arvada to Ira Gordon and Edna Elizabeth Stone and lived his entire life in Arvada. A graduate of Arvada High School, he later earned his degree in Business Administration from the University of Denver after three years of service in the Army. A steadfast supporter of free enterprise, Lee provided 40 years of leadership at Stonehouse Signs, an Arvada business which his family has owned and operated since 1863. His contributions to the local and national business community include service with the Arvada Chamber of Commerce, Industries for Jefferson County and the National Federation of Independent Business, where he served on the national board of directors. In honor of his service to the city and the business community, he was recognized as Arvada Man of the Year in 1976. A long-time member of Arvada Masonic Lodge #141, his later community service included volunteer positions at Colorado Ocean Journey and the Arvada Historical Society. Lee is survived by his wife Gayla Stone, sister and brother-in-law Betty Sue and Bob Morse, son and daughter-in-law Jeff & Patti Stone, daughter and son-in-law Becky & Steve Roche, grandsons Forrest & Graham Stone, Ian & Trevor Roche and numerous nieces and nephews. Lee’s keen sense of humor and dry wit will be missed. His adventurous spirit, exemplified by world travel, open-water sailing and numerous outdoor adventures, was an inspiration to all those who knew him. Memorial contributions to Friends of Man, PO Box 937, Littleton, CO 80160. A gathering and celebration of his life will be held at The Pavilion at Crown Hill Cemetery on Friday, June 18 at 10 AM.
