Herbert Milton Dalke was born May 29, 1918 in Henderson, Nebraska to Albert and Elizabeth (Friesen) Dalke. Herbert grew up on a farm and worked hard with his dad. He gave his life to Christ when he was born again on March 4, 1934. It was apparent very early that he had a passion for serving the Lord. His first opportunity came when he was 16 years old and his pastor asked him to teach a Sunday School class of third grade children. From there on he had a ministry of one kind or other until his health began to fail in recent years.
He attended elementary schools in Nebraska and Colorado, and graduated from high school at Grant, NE in 1937. He graduated Moody Bible Institute, Chicago, IL in 1942. . He spent three years in C.P.S. camps in Terry, Montana and Gulfport, Mississippi. He attended Southwestern State College, Weatherford, OK and Bethel College, N. Newton, KS, where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1955.
On June 7, 1945 Herbert married Bertha Penner. Soon after their marriage they accepted the call to Indian Mission work in Oklahoma, where he pastored mission churches for over 10 years. He served congregations in Ransom, KS, Alsen, ND, Marion, SD, Fontanelle, IA, Paso Robles, CA, Hopedale, IL and Sterling, IL, retiring from the pastorate in 1986. Herbert continued to serve the Lord doing guest preaching, teaching Bible Studies, and speaking occasionally at their retirement center.
His children and grandchildren will always remember him for his love and obedience to his Savior. He always shared his heart for God and he always prayed for his family. He cared deeply for his wife and family and carried his camera everywhere at family times. He was active and limber into his 90’s and would sit on the floor to play with his great grandchildren. His family has fond memories of playing ping pong, shuffleboard, croquet, table games, and most recently, dominoes, with Grandpa, every time they visited. He loved a good meal, and was especially fond of dessert, so it was fun cooking to please him, as he was so complimentary and appreciative. They always raised a big garden and he was a great helper and companion to his dear Bertha.
In their retirement, they lived five years in Oelwein, Iowa before moving in 2004 to Covenant Village, Westminster, CO, to be near their oldest daughter, who was their main caregiver. Herbert went to be with Jesus on October 13, 2012.
Grateful for sharing his life are his wife, Bertha; children: Evelyn (James) Rogers, Ken (Karen) Dalke, Dolores (Tom) Guilliam; son-in-law Bill Storey; grandchildren: Justin, Chelsie, Kevin, David, Michael, Rachel, Kathy, Bryan, Lauren and Jill; 13 great grandchildren; brothers: Willard (Mary) Dalke and Irvin (Wanda) Dalke; sisters Katharine Warkentin and Ruby (Arthur) Enns.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Janice Storey; sisters Rachel Dalke, Bertha Dalke, Alieda Zeitner, Alma Benedict; brothers-in-law Clarence Benedict and Henry Warkentin; and sister-in-law Lovella Dalke.
