Marilyn Mary Marie (Scarpati) Malmgren, daughter of the late Martin and Maizie Scarpati was born March 3, 1950 in Seaford, New York. Marilyn died on February 25, 2025, at the age of 74, from dementia-related causes.
She attended Seaford High School before attending nursing school at Nassau Community College, Marilyn was passionate about medicine and nursing until her retirement in 2018.
After her first marriage, Marilyn moved to Colorado and met the love of her life, Kurt Malmgren while teaching an EMT class in 1983. Excited to start their new life together, they were married in 1986. Marilyn took her role as stepmom to Kurt’s daughter, Tara (Malmgren) Emge seriously and built a home and family with the three of them.
In 1998, Marilyn became a grandma to grandson Tony Malmgren Gallo; she loved taking Tony to Disney World and the beach, and the two of them used to belt out Mama Mia Abba songs in the car. In 2012, she welcomed Dan Emge int her family when he married her daughter Tara. Then in 2014, she became a grandma to her second grandson, Andrew Emge, who loved talking with her, creating “secret” handshakes, playing catch, and giving her lots of hugs, when dementia made it difficult for her to interact.
Marilyn loved her family deeply including her late stepmother Yolanda, brother Marty (Jan), step brothers, Michael (Lucretia) and Stephen (Debra), step sister, Melinda (Stephen), and the whole Malmgren family. She would do anything for those she loved and even took in her sister-in-law and her kids, twice, to support them. She loved watching football and was a loyal fan of the Denver Broncos. Marilyn especially loved everything Christmas and always made it a special time with dinners, presents, decorations, and singing all the Christmas songs.
We’ll always imagine her saying, “inka ba dinka” to us when playing poker or board games and crying at every sad song, movie or commercial. We couldn’t have asked for a better stepmom, grandma, daughter in law, aunt or sister and will miss her every day. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all of us who loved her.
A memorial service for Marilyn will be held Friday, April 25, 2025 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Olinger Crown Hill Mortuary & Cem, 7777 West 29th Ave, Wheat Ridge, CO 80033.
