One of my best memories was when Aunt Mary, Grandma and Aunt Lillian came to visit us in Italy. We had so much fun together and they were all such wonderful guests.  Aunt Mary wasn't used to being on vacation and wanted to help in any way she could.  She was great at organizing and was even willing to tackle our junk drawer! One day we all traveled to Venice and as we walked into San Marco Square she laughed when she saw Doges Palace and said she's had a painting of that building on her wall for years and didn't realize it was a building in Venice! We'll all miss you Aunt Mary!

Aunt Mary was always a rule follower.  She certainly discouraged us from breaking rules and she was always a good example for us.  We must have traveled out to the farm (from Arvada to Byers) with Grandma and Aunt Mary about a dozen times.  When Grandma drove we were able to get her to go 56, maybe 57 mph on the highway.  Wen Aunt Mary would drive, we could cheer her on to maybe 52 mph.  She was not a speedster by any means.  However, one trip, we must have awakened her inner daredevil.  We were on the dirt road leading to the farm.  The road was mostly flat except for one decent size bump over a small creek (all of us kids pictured it as the perfect jumping ramp).  As we approached the bump/ramp all of the kids started chanting "faster, faster, faster"  and to our surprise Aunt Mary went faster.   Suddenly the 1960-something Valiant slipped the surly bonds of earth and, as this was before the days of seatbelts, I witnessed my cousin Theresa and my brother floating, weightless high above their seats.  With a big thud, the car hit the ground and were forced back into our seats.  The noise of the gravel road and the A.M. radio were drowned out by the thunderous cheer of excitement and surprise that Aunt Mary broke the rules.

It’s one of my all time favorites in the family memory bank. I was ren years old (52 now). The family would often gather at Grandma Viola’s (Mary’s mother) house for Sunday dinners or special events, like birthdays or holidays. After enjoying way to much good food, a card game would break out. Uno was one of our favorites and eight of us started a game. I had unfairly developed a reputation for occasionally bending the rules or making up my own. In one game, I had called out “Uno” and had one card left. My Aunt Mary felt that was a little to early and wanted to see my hands. Then asked me to stand up so she could check my seat and surroundings for anything that might have “mistakenly” been dropped (just to be transparent, that might have occurred a few times). Then said in a very stern voice “lift up your shirt and take off your pants”!!!  I was proud to comply (the cards were actually in the deck, I had been discarding two at a time), but Grandma intervened and kept it a PG gathering. We have always laughed when this story is told. Aunt Mary was always a kind and loving person, and she is a large part of why I smile when I remember our family  times  together. The world needs more like her, and it saddens me that there is one less now. May she Rest In Peace.
