Dear Dad,

You were such a great dad! I remember so many fun times growing up: trips to Connecticut beach for an impromptu barbeque, driving teenyboppers to concerts, hosting parties and my wedding in the backyard where I had raked and held bags for endless piles of leaves, letting me get a dog (Biff!). You were always there for me. You taught me how to be a responsible, upstanding person as a grew up. I can't believe you already been gone for a month! I miss sharing many things with you: books, tennis, history. I take solace in knowing you are happy again joined with Mom and will see you again later.

My thoughts are with everyone in the family. Thought I’d share some fond memories of Paul from when I was very young and living across the street from the wonderful Mahnen family unit.

So much that can be said about your dad and the wonderful influence he had on me as both a good neighbor and primarily as an additional family member to our family. Some moments (of many) come to mind: 

I remember when I had a school band concert performance at Greenvale and had to wear a tie, but did not know how to tie it, and my dad had not come home from work. My mom said, "Go to Mr. Mahnen, he'd be overjoyed to help you, because he has three girls!" She sent me across the street and he was indeed pleased to be of service. A simple yet meaningful gesture :)

I also remember a night when a small group of us were coming back from some outing in NYC on the train. We had no ride back and I thought we were going to have to walk home from Scarsdale Station! Next thing I know, your dad arrived to pick us up; he was wearing a leather jacket and blasting his music, and all I could think was, "Thanks for rescuing us," and, "Clearly he's enjoying an excuse to go on a mini-outing." Little things that meant a lot to me.

I remember him being a wonderful host with your mom at the Green Knolls Progressive Dinner (where the cocktails were flowing freely) while we sat perched in your tree watching the guests come and go for a spell.

And I remember your parents buying me a pair of beautiful new fish after we came home from our vacation in France -- because the day before we left, I put my fishie in your big fish tank thinking he'd make friends, and he was gobbled up within the hour while we were all out to lunch. Yes, that was a traumatic experience for me, but your folks knew just how to make it right.

We will always have endless and indelible memories of your mom and dad...

Paul (and his beautiful wife Lucille) were good friends and neighbors of ours for more than thirty years in Eastchester, New York,  and we had many great adventures together.  He was a wonderful neighbor and a great guy and will be sorely missed. Over the course of many years, we played tennis together often at Lake Isle Country Club, bowled almost every week for more than fifteen years with the Hits and Misses Bowling League, and attended numerous elegant balls with the Westchester Dinner Dance Club.  At harvest time every year, Paul gave us fresh vegetables from his garden and come the Fourth of July we watched the Leewood fireworks from his back yard. I once mentioned to Paul that I had been served a very weak oxtail soup on a Cunard cruise, and he insisted on providing me some of the "good stuff" from his private stock. Unfortunately, our paths diverged after we moved to North Carolina, but we always had fond memories of our times together. Rest in peace, dear friend.

It is hard to find words to fill the hole that you will leave behind in my life. You were a pillar of strength. You knew love, but also pain and loss, but you didn't let it bring you down. You were kind and loving, but also silly and loved to have a good time. We had so many good times together as a family and it's those memories that are the richest and that will continue to remind me not to take life too seriously.

When we were little, you would pounce on us when we went to bed like a big bear and we loved it! When we were older, you would drive down to Manhattan to pick us up from concerts or clubs because you wanted us home safe, but also because you wanted us to have fun and do the things teenagers need to do. As I became an adult, you let me work alongside you in your consulting practice and I learned not just about the pharmaceutical industry, but also how to run a business. When I entered the corporate world, you were the only family member who had also worked in that environment. I didn't realize it at first, but I was basically acting like a female Paul Mahnen, which meant I came off as a very assertive, confident, and strong woman in the corporate world, at a time, when that wasn't always expected. I didn't let it stop me and I am still stepping into my Mahnen power, thanks to you.

You were the best grandpa to all your grandchildren, and they will miss you so much. Your generosity and kindness will not be forgotten. You had the biggest heart.  

Of all the pictures in this set, my favorite is the one of you laying down and resting your head on my knee. When I look at that picture, I see a father who could be vulnerable and lean on others for support. You let me be there for you these last few years and help you where you needed it. Most of all I will remember how you never stayed the same. You grew throughout your life and became a different man learning something new or changing your perspective with the dawn of each day.

Barbara, Donna and Family- 

I only had the pleasure of knowing Paul for about a month, but in that time, he (and you all) became important to me. Spending time playing cribbage and watching the US Open had become the highlight of my week. I was able to tell him how much I loved to spend time with him, and how I looked forward to it the last time I saw him. 

Thank you for sharing him with me even for the short time.
