Robert W. (Bob) Merritt was born to Oscar & Lulu Merritt on April 11, 1929 in Englewood, Co. As Bob grew up he had various jobs, one of which was a call-boy at Porter Sanitarium. He was also a caddy at Wellshire Golf Course.
Bob went into the United States Air Force 1946 where he achieved the rank of corporal. During his time in the Air Force he studied weather as well as working on B-29’s. After serving his country in the Air Force, Bob’s passion for flying continued and he received his pilots license in 1948.
Bob’s early career found him working for the Union Pacific Railroad where he worked his way up to fireman on steam locomotives. He even fired the Challengers and the Big Boys, of which he was very proud.
Bob met the love of his life, June L. Becker and they were married March 4, 1956.
Bob was truly a family man and loved his wife and children, Bryan, Bob and Debbie with all his heart.
He enjoyed camping, fishing and spending time with his family. He especially enjoyed visits by his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Bob was very active in his church serving in several capacities including deacon, junior Sabbath School teacher, and was known as a greeter with a great smile.
Bob’s truck driving career began after leaving the railroad. He worked for many local trucking companies and loved to share stories of hauling dynamite and sulfuric acid over Loveland pass. In 1971 He began driving for North Park Transportation and retired from there in 1991, after 20 years of service.
Retirement saw Bob and June spending winters in their motor home in Southern California with friends and family at the Fountain of Youth Spa. They spent 12 winters there enjoying the warm weather.
In 2006 Bob and June celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
Bob passed away on Monday, January 6, 2014 in Lakewood, Colorado surrounded by his family.
