Sherman Charles Jones, born to Marshall D. Jones and Winifred Harvey Jones on June 21, 1925 in Saffordville, KS. As a young child, Sherman lived with his parents on a farm in Kansas. The family relocated to Burlington, Colorado where Sherman started school. After a short time, the family moved to Cope, Colorado where Sherman helped his father in his grocery and dry goods store. As this was during the depression and dust bowl days, their customers’ inability to pay their grocery bills necessitated another move. Sherman and his father moved the entire store to Miliken, Colorado, and later moved the store to Denver, Colorado. Sherman said he grew up behind the grocery counter helping his Dad. When in his senior year, at South High School in Denver, he was awarded his diploma 6 weeks before graduation to enable his enlistment in the Navy to serve his country during WWII. All of Sherman’s wartime service was aboard the U.S.S. St. Louis. Sherman was extremely proud his naval service and was able in in his later years to attend a number of ship reunions. After discharge from the Navy, Sherman again helped his Dad in the grocery business, and held other various jobs until he was employed as a machinist with Sundstrand Aeronautics from where he retired after 31 years. After his retirement, he met and married Mary L. Smith. They had 21 wonderful years together. He spent his final years in Eaton and Greeley, Colorado near his children. Sherman loved the outdoors, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and traveling to all 50 states with Mary.
