Thomas Trowbridge Grose "Trobe"

Thomas L. Trowbridge Grose “Trobe”, Age 98, of Golden, passed away Wednesday September 13, 2023. He is survived by his wife Cecilia Travis; his sister Virginia Young; two children, Clark Grose and Kathy Beymer; four grandchildren; two great granddaughters; two step daughters; and a step granddaughter. He is fondly remembered by many wonderful cousins, nieces and nephews, friends and colleagues. Trobe was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Barbara; granddaughter, Lucia and his brother, Peter.

He was born in 1924, Evanston, IL to Clyde L. and Carolyn T. Grose. He served in WWII as Aerologist 3rd class in the Navy, 1944-45 on the USS Essex in the Pacific Theater. Married Barbara in 1947 and graduated from the University of Washington B.S.,1948; M.S.,1949 and Stanford University Ph.D, 1955. This launched a long and illustrious career as a geologist, earning the distinction of Professor Emeritus of Geology at the Colorado School of Mines.

He was named the 2002 Outstanding Scientist by the RMAG, and felt most honored to have received the Thomas Dibblee Award for his map work in CA and NV. Continuing to publish maps well into his 90’s, he loved revisiting his favorite field locations, including Peru and Lake Tahoe, with his geologist son and other family members.

I find I am unequal to the task of summing up a long life of many seasons in a few words or stories. Even his own glorious stories fall short of understanding the essence of such a life. We will honor him in memories, in silence and in nature, where a sacred ‘Awe’ filled his spirit while listening to the sound of “wiggling water”.

Our family is grateful for the love of his compassionate team of “caregivers extraordinaire”, and the support of Trail Winds Hospice. Thank you, your presence enriched his life. Burial - Golden Cemetery, Monday, November 13, 2023 at 2:30pm..
