On November 13, 2013 at 9:40 AM at Clear Creek Care Center, Tobias Raymundo Medina, also known as Toby R. Medina turned out the light for his generation of the Medina Family. Although he struggled with Stomach Cancer he was victorious in the battle. He was born to Luis and Francisquita Medina on December 10, 1929 in Fort Garland, CO. Toby was the only son of 5 children. He had 4 sisters, Louisa, Emily, Socorro and Sadie who died as a toddler. His father later blessed him with 3 additional siblings Esther, Loretta and Ruben. Toby shared many stories about playing in the mountains when he lived in Old La Veta pass before the new highway was built. Eventually, he moved to Pueblo, Colorado with his mother and step-father Max Martinez.
In December of 1951 at St. Leander’s Church in Pueblo, Colorado, Toby married Rachel Miera. On May 19, 1952 their 1st child was born, Raymond Joseph. Their only daughter was born on November 18, 1954, Nancy Ann. They had 2 more sons Gary Lee on October 14, 1959 and Mark Anthony on May 30, 1963. During those years he worked in the Pueblo laundry industry and as a laborer. He was later disabled due to several back surgeries. His wife, Rachel passed away on February 2, 1965 after her own battle with cancer.
Toby’s children eventually married. Raymond married Evelyn Trujillo and Gary married Pam Vasquez who preceded him in death on November 11, 2008. Eventually, his family grew with 8 grandchildren. Born to Ray and Evelyn were Nancy Rae, Raymond Joseph and Mia Marie. Born to Nancy were Jacob Malaquis and Rachel Tobias. Born to Gary and Pam were Gary Lee, Faith Bethany and Joel Israel. The grandchildren blessed their PoPo Toby with 15 great grandchildren. Nancy Rae blessed him with Todd Dallas Kochis, Jacob blessed him with Dawnicia Romero, Rachel blessed him with Caleb and Malachi Barrera and Bella and Leyla Leyva, Ray and Charlene blessed him with Elysia and Charlize, Mia blessed him with Pablo, Victoria & Isabella Solis and Jodeci Martell, Gary Lee blessed him with Partrick Lee and Faith has blessed him with Serenity and Xzavier Cruz. Although Joel has not blessed him with grandchildren we await their eventual arrival.
Raymond is now married to Stella and Nancy is married to Will Walser. In August of 2001, Toby moved to Arvada, CO. to be closer to his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Toby enjoyed fishing and visited many of Colorado’s lakes. He taught a couple of his grandsons to fish and it a sport they still enjoy today. He enjoyed talking about his great adventures and had many friends. He gave his life to Christ and enjoyed playing the guitar.
In his departure, Toby did shut the light out for his generation. As you can see from the above, his family has assured him of a legacy of generations to come. He leaves us saddened but with many wonderful memories to share. It is these things we will treasure as we bid him farewell. He and all the generations before him will greet us when we depart. He is loved and will be greatly missed by family and friends.
