February 5, 1936 - May 21, 2017
Bonnie Crowder was born Yvonne Estelle Maxfield in Otonogan, Michigan, on February 5, 1936 to Brooks Maxfield and Betty Harlan Maxfield. She was the youngest of four children. Her two sisters—Joy Reil and Audrey Roser—preceded her in death, as well as her daughter Diane. She is survived by her brother Larry Maxfield, three children, four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
She met and married Robert A. “Bob” Crowder on December 18, 1954 in Raton, New Mexico. They were co-owners of Crowder Stables originally located at 6th and Simms in Lakewood. Those stables were a family affair led by “Pop” and Lily Crowder, as well as “Lucy” and Shirley Crowder.
Bonnie and Bob were their kids’ biggest fans. Following Little Britches, High School Rodeo, and numerous other associations, they hauled and competed across the region.
Bonnie was very proud of their family.
• Daughter Carol Crowder (Arvada, Colorado); grandson Cole Jackson (Keenesburg, Colorado); granddaughter Lexie Ashurst (Lusk, Wyoming); grandson-in-law Clay Ashurst; and great grandsons Miles and Grant Ashurst.
• Daughter Cathi Hadley and her husband Mike (Canon City, Colorado).
• Daughter Diane Crowder.
• Son Robbie Crowder and his wife Missy (Fort Lupton, Colorado); grandson Wyatt and granddaughter Peyton.
• And an honorary daughter who Bonnie felt especially close to—Suzanne Martin (Arvada, Colorado).
In September of 1982, Bob and Bonnie lost their youngest daughter Diane, a couple months before her 22nd birthday in a single car accident.
Not long after that they reestablished Crowder Stables west of 74th and Indiana in Arvada.
Bob died on January 26 of 1992. He was the love of Bonnie’s life and she never remarried.
Bonnie lived with Carol in Arvada for the past 15 years—just east of where the stable had been. She loved to spend time with her family, cooking and visiting. She enjoyed her walks with her sister-in-law Shirley not far from here Crown Hill park. This past year Bonnie faced some serious health challenges, but she took them in stride, always searching for answers to her recovery.
