Donald Joseph Kurtz, age 88, of Union Lake, passed away peacefully after a battle with Parkinson’s disease on March 30, 2023. Don was born March 17, 1935 in Washington D.C. He attended the University of Maryland where he received his teaching degree, and Eastern Michigan University where he earned a master’s degree in guidance counseling. He worked the entirety of his career for the Walled Lake School District as a middle school counselor until his retirement in 1990.
Don is survived by his wife, Pat; his brother, Bob (Ruth); his daughters, Pam, Beth (Brad), and Lisa (Toni); and his five grandchildren, Haley (Pat), Joe, Franny, Anna (Tyler) and Pheiv.
Don was passionate about his family, good food and collecting art in many forms. He was a well-known expert and collector of Alphonse Mucha and authored a book about Mucha’s life and work. Don was especially loved for his incredible sense of empathy, quick wit, storytelling and for finding the fun in any situation. He will be deeply missed.
Memorial Visitation will be held Saturday, April 8, 2023 from 1:00pm until 4:00pm at the Union Lake Chapel of the Elton Black & Funeral Home, 1233 Union Lake Road, White Lake.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Walled Lake Schools Foundation for Excellence.
