Mary "Elaine" McWilliams, 86, of West Bloomfield, Michigan, unexpectedly passed away on July 3, 2024. She was born on September 25, 1937, in Long Beach, CA, to parents Edward and Mary Sommers. Elaine lived a vibrant life that spanned several countries and states, and she left an indelible mark on all who knew her.
Elaine's early education took her to boarding schools in Europe, where she developed a love for learning and culture. She later attended finishing school there as well before marrying Arthur "Bud" McWilliams. Together, they shared nearly 40 years of love and adventure and raised four children together until his passing in 1993.
Throughout her life, Elaine not only lived in various locales around the globe, but she traveled extensively. Among her favorite places to travel were England, where she cherished the landscapes and memories, and Maui, where she frequently took her family in December to enjoy the Hawaiian culture, beautiful beaches, and endless perfect days – a tradition that several of her children have continued and passed down.
Elaine had a voracious appetite for reading, consuming approximately one book a day (with her collection of 24 pairs of reading glasses strategically placed around her home). She enjoyed investing in the stock market and visiting casinos with her husband and adult children. Elaine also loved the hunt for a bargain, whether at shops in popular tourist destinations, antiques auctions, estate sales, or online. Her love for dogs was evident as well; she always had a faithful companion by her side and ensured all her pets lived their best lives.
Above all, Elaine’s greatest joy and purpose in life was her family. With unwavering dedication, she worked tirelessly and selflessly to ensure her husband and children had every opportunity to thrive and lead happy, successful lives. Elaine’s commitment to nurturing well-rounded children shone brightly through her emphasis on education, including the daily use of proper grammar and pronunciation, and enrichment activities such as music lessons, travel opportunities, and tailored experiences related to each child’s unique interests and talents. She continued to support and encourage her children throughout their adult lives too. She leaves behind a profound impact on those who knew her, reminding them of the enduring power of a mother’s devotion.
Elaine is survived by her children Sharon (Thomas) Earnest, Janet Rockwell, Edward McWilliams, and Christie (Justin) McWilliams-Abendroth; grandchildren Christopher Laughter, Michael (Sarah) Capps, Ryan Rockwell, Trevor (Michaela) Hughes, Kelsey Carter, Chloe Abendroth, and David Abendroth; great-grandchildren Serenity Hughes, Kayson Hughes, Langston Capps, and Silas Capps; siblings Steven (Karen) Sommers and Carol (James) Fauci, along with many nieces, nephews, and friends who will fondly remember her.
Elaine is reunited in death with her beloved husband, Arthur "Bud" McWilliams, and her parents Edward and Mary Sommers.
