Peter C. Cooper, age 61, of Pontiac, was born August 31, 1960 in East Lansing and passed away November 4, 2021 in Pontiac. Beloved husband of LaVette Anderson-Cooper. Loving father of Lilyanne Cooper, and step-father of Sasha Bennette-Sims. Proud step-grandfather of Rose Sims. Dear brother of Christian (Denise) Cooper, Lizanne (Abubaker Bushagour) Cooper, and James (Margaret) Cooper. Peter was preceded in passing by his parents, Robert and Helen Cooper.
We are sad to announce that Peter Collins Cooper died November 4, 2021 in his home surrounded by his loving family. Pete Cooper was the second child born to Bob and Bette Cooper. He was born in East Lansing, Michigan on August 31, 1960 while Bob was still in graduate school studying Structural Engineering at Michigan State University. Before Pete, older brother Chris was born in 1959.
Shortly after Pete was born, the family moved to Warner Drive in Orchard Lake, Michigan and it was there that the family was completed with the additions of Lizanne and Jim Cooper.
Pete Cooper spent his entire childhood on Warner Drive and he truly enjoyed his childhood, playing with his siblings and neighborhood kids in the open fields and on the lake.
Pete was a Boy Scout, achieving the rank of Eagle and Order of the Arrow. Pete umpired little league baseball and worked several years on the grounds for Bay Pointe Country Club. His work performance there is the direct reason his brothers were hired to also work there.
Pete attended Walled Lake Central High School. He competed and lettered in cross country, basketball, and tennis. Pete was involved in High School Marching Band, eventually becoming the drum major. Pete graduated from Central with honors and then attended the University of Michigan, where he was in the Marching Band his entire undergraduate years. He played trumpet in the Marching Band and played in Rose Bowl games, parades and special events like the Super bowl held at the Pontiac Silverdome in 1982 where he “kinda” met singer Diana Ross. Pete graduated from U of M in Dentistry and worked as a Dentist in Owosso, Walled Lake, and Detroit, before owning his own Dentistry business in Waterford.
Pete was a highly accomplished runner, running almost 300 events of marathon length or longer and traveling and running in all 50 states and Europe. Pete was an enthusiastic musician, playing the trumpet, the bagpipes, the guitar, piano and singing in the Orchard Lake Community Church Presbyterian Choir. He also played in a band with his brother Jim. Pete enjoyed gardening with native plants and his yard was honored multiple times by being included in the Pontiac Garden Club tour. Pete was also a huge lover of animals and adopted/rescued many dogs and cats over the years. His last pet was his devoted and loving Pekichon dog Nikki, who stayed by his side until the end.
Despite his devotion to these activities, Pete was most fulfilled with the birth of his daughter Lilyanne, and then when he met and married his love LaVette Anderson.
A link in the Cooper sibling chain is broken and can never be replaced. Pete will be truly missed by his family, relatives, friends and community.
