Robert Denis Gavlinski, affectionately known as Rob, Bob, Gavie, and Gus, passed away peacefully on February 1, 2026, in West Bloomfield, Michigan, surrounded by his loving family. Born on March 26, 1944, in Detroit, Michigan, to William and Viola Gavlinski, Rob was a beacon of joy and a pillar of strength throughout his 81 years.
Rob's journey in life began in the bustling city of Detroit but found its heartbeat in the serene settings of Oregon, where he lived from 1974 to 1982. He then returned to his roots in Michigan, where he continued to build his legacy. His dedication to his work was evident in his 30-year tenure as a safety engineer at the Fireman's Fund Insurance Company in Portland, Oregon. His professional journey also included stints with Westfield out of Ohio and Harleysville, Pennsylvania, from which he eventually retired. Rob's commitment to his country was as steadfast as his work ethic; he served honorably in the United States Army, a period of his life he reflected upon with great pride.
Rob's passion for life could be seen on the ice rinks where he not only played hockey as a talented winger but also imparted his knowledge as a coach. His love for the sport was further showcased through his role as a linesman for the Portland Winterhawks' juniors team. A lifelong fan of the Montreal Canadiens, or the "Habs," Rob's enthusiasm for hockey was infectious and brought joy to all who shared in his fervor.
Beyond the rink, Rob was an avid outdoorsman, relishing every opportunity to fish for steelhead and trout or to hit the links for a round of golf. His appreciation for the simple pleasures in life extended to his immaculate lawn, which he tended to with a trusted push mower, ensuring every blade of grass was perfect.
Rob's sense of humor, handiness, and thoughtfulness were the hallmarks of his character, endearing him to friends and family alike. He brought laughter and warmth to every gathering, and his ability to fix anything that needed repair was legendary.
The family that Rob cherished includes his beloved wife, Cheri, whom he wed on a beautiful summer day, August 6, 1966, at St. Denis Catholic Church in Royal Oak, Michigan. He was a devoted father to Bob (Shannon) Gavlinski and Shelly (Michael) Kuhn. His role as a grandfather to Milana and Sicilia Gavlinski; Tobias, Noah, Zachary, Benjamin, and Addison Kuhn was one he treasured deeply, imparting wisdom and creating memories that will last a lifetime. Rob is also survived by his sister, Barbara Heagen, who will miss her brother's vibrant spirit and loving presence.
Rob's journey through life was marked by the love he shared, the lives he touched, and the laughter he spread. His memory will continue to inspire those who knew him, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of his family and friends. Robert Denis Gavlinski's story is one of love, laughter, and a life well-lived—a story that will be told for generations to come.
