If you’re lucky enough to be Irish you are lucky enough. And as an Irishman, Tom McKeown had a blessed life. Thomas Joseph McKeown raced to be born November 17, 1936, in Detroit, Michigan ahead of his twin brother Jerry. From his earliest days, Tom lived life fast, loud and every day to the fullest.
Tom graduated from Salesian High School in Detroit, Michigan. He then served in the Army as a weapon’s machinist and was honorably discharged. Tom met Carole at an “International Set” party, and he was smitten. Their romance bloomed from the Irish Hills to Detroit, MI. They were married in 1961 and their adventure as a new family began with the arrival of Mark nine months later. As a family they gravitated to the lakes of Oakland County, first Commerce Lake then Brendel Lake and then Sylvan & Otter.
Tom was a loving and devoted husband of Carole, married 62 years, and dear father of Mark (Debbie), Karyn, Kim, Melissa Schulz (Brian) and Amy Scott (Nick). Dear Grandfather of Devin (Talia), Emily, Brennen, Calum, Ava, Griffin and Parker. Patriarch to many more who affectionately requested to be “Honorary McKeowns”. Tom was the brother of the late Mary Lou McKelvey, Jerry, Jimmy, and Nina and is survived by his sisters Judy Nicholson and Karen (Bill) Lyon. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Tom was sociable and loved to have others around him. He was a proud member of the Knights of Equity, the Oakland County Boat Club, The American Legion, The Elks, The Eagles, the Knights of Columbus, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and is an alumni of Lakewood Village. Tom was known to be mischievous, fun-loving and wanted to ensure everyone around him was having a good time.
Tom worked for many years at Michigan National Bank and then as an entrepreneur. He was admired for his strong work ethic. But what he was most passionate about was his family. His bride Carole was the love of his life, and his kids and grandkids were his “Pride & Joy”.
Florida was Tom & Carole’s winter home for the last 20 years with Treasure Island becoming their favorite destination, where they continued their love of boating. In lieu of flowers, please raise a glass of Irish Whisky to Tom’s honor as we are sure he is toasting us from Heaven.
Carole, Mark, Karyn, Kim, Melissa & Amy
