

McCabe, Mary Helen, passed away early Saturday morning, January 26, 2013 at Kansas Masonic Home. She was born on June 10, 1918 in Stotts City in Lawrence County, Missouri to Homer Lee and Augusta Caroline Eggeman Jones. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willard D. McCabe, and her brother, Dwight Jones. She is survived by her brother, Dee Jones, sister Marjorie Smith, sister Frances Dyer, four nephews and four nieces, as well as many other family members, friends and close neighbors, Larry and Sue Cushenbery, Shelby, Michelle and Hailie Wilcox. She was an active member of Asbury Church of Wichita. Mary Helen attended one-room country schools through 8th grade. She graduated from Rude’s Business College and later attended Springfield, MO Teacher’s College and William Jewell College. Later during WW II, she worked at North American Aviation in Kansas City. She was married to Willard D. McCabe on October 5th, 1946, in Kansas City. They moved to Hutchinson, KS in 1950, where Mary Helen would learn to play golf while volunteering at Grace Hospital. In 1959, they moved to Wichita, KS. When Willard retired in 1972, he also learned to play golf, and joined her often to play golf in the early mornings. She won a club championship in 1985. Recently, when asked what she had done, her reply was, “Not very much-played golf for forty years.” Mary Helen went back to school in 1966, to receive a degree from WSU at age 50, graduating Magna Cum Laude. She taught 7th grade math at Hamilton Jr. High for 4-1/2 years. Mary Helen was an intelligent, analytical woman with a keen sense of humor and a heart for God. She has left a many writings of her memories and considered the following to be the greatest values in life: (1) Faith in God (2) A loving, close-knit family (3) A pastor and church friends (4) Generosity toward others (5) Gratefulness. She has also instructed us to “never, never say an unkind word. You will never be sorry for the unkind get-even words you didn’t say.” A memorial service for Mary Helen will be held at the Asbury Church on Wednesday, January 30, at 10:00 a.m. Donations may be made to the Asbury Church in lieu of flowers. www.HillsideFuneralHomeWest.com
