Born November 11, 1942, in Sewickley, PA, to Anna Louise and Zolton Ronyecz, Julie moved to Hampton, S.C. as a young child. She went to Wade Hampton High School before attending Winthrop College to pursue a degree in Early Childhood Education. Upon graduation in 1964, she moved to Columbia, S.C., to begin her elementary school teaching career and where she would also meet her husband, Barry George.
Julie was the heart and soul of the George Family, raising 3 children whom she supported in every possible way for more than 50 years. Known as “Mama George” to many of her children’s friends, Julie’s unique ability to care for others touched the lives of so many friends and family over the years. She will also be fondly remembered for her love of her favorite things: working in the garden; going to the beach; traveling to New York and New Orleans; enjoying Elvis Presley’s music and Paul Newman movies; and, watching men’s college basketball and the Pittsburgh Steelers. Julie attended church services at Forest Lake Presbyterian Church and Shandon Presbyterian Church.
Julie was predeceased by her parents, Anna Louise and Zolton Ronyecz. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Barry George; son, Travis; daughters, Paige and Jennifer (Joseph Quattrocchi); her sister, Amy Tuten; nephew, Daniel Tuten (Kim); grandnieces, Gracie and Neely; and countless friends and family members who will miss her every day.
The family will hold a private graveside service with a celebration of Julie’s life to take place at a future time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Homeless No More 2711 Middleburg Drive, Suite 213, Columbia, SC 29204. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
