David Frederick McCammon died suddenly in his home in New Orleans, LA on March 5th, 2021. He was 72. Dave was born December 1948 in Beaver Falls, PA to Lois and Ronald McCammon, the oldest of two sons. He was a graduate of Ben Franklin High- class of 1966. He was an Eagle Scout. He graduated from Emory University, Summa Cum Laude.
He returned to New Orleans and became a successful businessman in the bar and restaurant business and retail.
In 1976, Dave opened Que Sera, a bar and restaurant on St. Charles Ave. Que Sera was immensely popular in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Wednesdays at Que Sera was the famous Happy Hour of three drinks for the price of one. People would overflow to the neutral ground. He also had a special of nurses in uniform drink free.
In 1980, he took over ownership of the Milan Lounge, a small neighborhood bar. In 1983, New Orleans finally got cable TV, and baseball fans could watch baseball everyday on WGN. So Dave and his customers adopted the Cubs; after all, they were lovable losers just like our Saints at the time. Dave set the atmosphere; he made Cubbie Blue bleachers and added ivy on the walls. Wrigley Field South was born.
Dave was owner of the Milan for 35 years, making it the place it is today. He created a spot where people felt at home, part of a Family. The Milan Family. He genuinely cared for everyone, and it showed.
He started a charity golf tournament called the Annual Milan Golf Scramble. Each year, they have raised tens of thousands for local charities such as Lighthouse for the Blind and Audubon Nature Institute. After raising money for Team Gleason, he decided that they would make Team Gleason their annual charity.
In 1997, David and his best friend opened the Mayan Import Company, a small cigar shop that has grown into 3 successful cigar shops.
Dave loved St. Patrick’s Day and the Irish Channel Parade. When he had a house on Annunciation St., he and his friends would put on an epic “St. Patrick’s Day Extravaganza” and everyone was invited, and they came by the hundreds for live music, free beer, and Port-O-Lets. They held this extravaganza for over 20 years, and then the parade changed its route and did not go down Annunciation St. anymore. Dave also rode in the parade, and later he would get a group of guys and ride in the parade every year.
Dave loved many things. He loved scuba diving and became a diver for the Aquarium of the Americas. Of course, he was an avid Cubs, LSU, and Saints Fan. He enjoyed cooking, gardening, and building stuff.
Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Lois (Hill) and Ronald McCammon.
Dave married his loving and devoted wife Glenda Thomas McCammon on August 8, 1990. They would have been married 31 years this year.
He is survived by his son, Jason McCammon (Ashley Constant); his brother, Keith McCammon (Robin Meyer); his precious grandchildren Max and Addie McCammon; and a godchild, Petty Officer 2nd Class Nicholas Munsch.
Due to Covid restrictions, a Celebration of Life will be held at Mayan Import Company when it is safe for all to attend.
