SUNRISE MARCH 7TH , 1935- SUNSET MARCH 15TH , 2020
God decided to pick another one of His precious flowers on a beautiful afternoon of March 15th , 2020. Evelynlena White peacefully passed away. Evelynlena was born on March 7th, 1935 in Wisacky, South Carolina to the late Mary and Johnnie Anthony. She was the fourth of twelve children. She was the beloved wife of the late Brewster Lee White. Brewster was the love of her life from the day they met and whom she married March 1st 1968, in NYC. With this union one child was born Aretha Yvette White. She was also the beloved mother of three other children Janie Mae (Deceased), Bebe, and James. Evelynlena loved and adored her grandchildren Danaya, Bruce, Brian, Tiffany, Anthony, PA, Tre, Gert and Jessica; and her many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was a Dear sister to Johnnie Mae Dillingham(Deceased) of NC, Lillie Mae Peterson(Deceased) of SC, Joseph Anthony(Deceased) of SC, Glenn Anthony(Deceased) of NC, Julie Wright(Deceased), Lizzie Anthony of NYC, Robert Anthony of PA, Edgar Anthony of NYC, Willie Lee Anthony of SC, Annie Lee Gamble of CT, and James Anthony of NYC.
Evelynlena was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in NYC where she loved to sing and became a member of the inspirational choir and E.W. Wainwright Choir in 2013. Her devotion to the church led her to become a Deaconess of Shiloh Baptist Church. She was so happy to accept the roles and responsibilities of being a Deaconess of the church. She made sure Bruce, Brian, and Nay all had new suits and dresses to wear for her big day. She even told Craig to buy a new suit. I watched her study for over a year to accomplish something that meant so much to her. That was a very proud moment in her life. She was also a nurse for 35 years she loved to care and help people. She worked until she retired to care and help raise her grandchildren Danaya, Bruce and Brian. She loved to gardening, and her favorite meals to cook were collard greens, macaroni and cheese, peas and rice, ribs, and cornbread among other things. Evelynlena and Brewster also loved to have parties at her house. Every 4th of July she would BBQ with friends and family. Everyone loved and enjoyed her grilled hamburgers, and ribs and barbecue chicken.
Many of you, who knew my mom, knew she also had a big bright smile on her face that would light up any room. She also loved to dance. As soon as her song came on her and my Auntie Trell would tear up the dance floor. She knew what to say to lift your spirits when you were down. People would always call and talk to her and she would be more than glad to listen and give advice when needed. When she got ill and couldn’t speak her eyes and smile spoke for her.
The love she always had for her friends and family will forever remain in our hearts and spirits.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter Aretha Yvette McKnight, her son in law William McKnight and her grandchildren Danaya, Bruce, Brian and many nieces and nephews.
