Dr Wonmo Dong went home to be with the Lord on July 13, 2020 at the age of 85 in Bellevue, Washington. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Catherine Aukhee Song Dong; his children, Clara Lee (Daniel), Christine Lee (Alexander) and Dr. Kenneth Dong (Catherine) and his grandchildren, Andy, Amy, Anna and Abraham Dong and Michael Lee. He is also survived by two younger brothers, three younger sisters and 18 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in passing by an older brother and a younger brother.
Dr. Dong was born on April 4, 1935 in Hungnam, North Korea and moved to South Korea in 1948. He is the son of Byung Chan Dong and Young Man Hahn.
He is a graduate of Pai Chai High School and Yonsei University (BA) in Seoul, Korea. He immigrated to the US in 1958 and went on to receive his BA from Southwestern University, MA from University of Kentucky and Ph.D from Georgetown University as a Danforth Foundation fellow. He was Professor Emeritus in Political Science and director of the Asian Studies program at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas for 32 years. From 2000, he lived in Kirkland, Washington and was Korean Program Scholar in Residence at the Jackson School of International Studies, University of Washington until 2011.
