

Born on February 4, 1923 in Owensboro, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Clarence Coleman Greenwell and Mary Elouise Cooper Greenwell. He was one of eleven children and was preceded in death by brothers Vivan, Charles, Rudy, Robert, and sisters Mary Ada (Frey), Catherine (Atherton), Virginia, and Anna Bell (Akin). He is survived by brother Bill Greenwell of Florida and sister Beverly Nuckolls of Kentucky.
John attended Owensboro Senior High School. He married Mary Alice Berry of Owensboro in 1945.
He served in WWII as a First Lieutenant in the US Army and was honorably discharged in 1946. Upon discharge, he began his 30 year career with Ideal Pure Milk Co in Owensboro, Kentucky starting as a route salesman and advancing through the company. In 1964 John became General Sales Manager and transferred to Evansville, Indiana where he continued his advancement to the position of Vice President. In 1976 he joined Southern Belle Dairy in Somerset, Kentucky as Executive Vice President and General Manager until his retirement in 1990. During his professional career, John served as Director of The American Dairy Association of Kentucky, Director of Midwest Dairy Products Association, and Director and President of the Dairy Products Association of Kentucky. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Somerset Rotary Club, Humana Lake Cumberland Hospital, and the Somerset United Way.
John was actively involved in many community service organizations. He proudly served as Scoutmaster of Troop 15 in Owensboro, Kentucky during which he received numerous awards recognizing his commitment and service, including Scoutmaster's Key, Silver Beaver, and the Scouting Religious Awards of Bronze Pelican and St. George. He actively participated in the Jaycees, Junior Achievement, and Booster Clubs at Owensboro Catholic High School and Memorial High School in Evansville, Indiana. He and Mary Alice were founding members of Immaculate Catholic Church in Owensboro, Kentucky and John served in many volunteer capacities at St. Benedict's Cathedral of Evansville, Indiana, St. Mildred Catholic Church of Somerset, Kentucky, and St. Mary Magdalene of Apex, North Carolina.
He is survived by his sons John Greenwell and wife Jan, of Scottsdale, AZ and Tom Greenwell and wife Linda, of Carrollton, TX; daughters Sheila Lattner and husband Michael, of Cary, NC and Charlene Poisel and husband Boyd, of Raleigh, NC; nine grandchildren, Kara (Greenwell) Prahler and husband Chris, Kent Greenwell and wife Kristi, Stephanie (Greenwell) Perkins and husband Jarrod, Kyle Greenwell and wife Shelley, Shannon (Poisel) Fang and husband Kerry, Matthew Poisel, Kate (Lattner) Strasser and husband Brad, Maggie (Lattner) Burge and husband Steven, Emma Lattner; five great-grandchildren, Blake and Brenden Greenwell, Beckham and JD Prahler, and Lydia Fang.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 64 years, Mary Alice Berry Greenwell in 2008.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in John's memory on Saturday, January 30, 2016 at 6:30 pm at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in John's name to the church at 625 Magdala Place, Apex, NC 27502.
A graveside service and inurnment will be held on Saturday, April 2, 2016 at Mater Dolorosa Cemetery in Owensboro, Kentucky.
