Craig was born on November 6, 1956 in Ann Arbor, Michigan to Dale and Janet Grimes. Craig led a multifaceted life as an athlete, scientist, engineer, author, friend, and father. Growing up, he enjoyed competitive swimming and skiing. Later in life, he transitioned to triathlons, including several Hawaiian Ironman races. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas and spent his professional career working in industrial, academic and entrepreneurial roles. Craig could frequently be found reading, solving Sunday crosswords, or watering his newly planted trees. He authored several technical books and, more recently, a historical fiction book titled A Distant Mountain. He was passionate about learning, music, nature, books (you could fill a library with the books that he read), cycling, and, most of all, his children. In the last few years, he was able to live his life-long dream of bicycling the Pyrenees, the mountains that he so revered from years of watching the Tour de France. Craig was a loving friend and father, with an adventurous and curious spirit, a brilliant mind, and a great sense of humor. Thank you to all who brought joy to his life.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Janet Grimes.
Craig will be lovingly remembered by his son, Keltin Grimes; daughter, Kyra Grimes; father, Dale Grimes; sister, Prudence Holman; and his beloved pets Oscar, Barley, Oats and Buster. He will also be greatly missed by his former spouse, Beth Dickey, and his dear friend Joana Gonzalez.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Please check back for more details.
In lieu of customary remembrances, memorial contributions can be donated to Second Chance Adoptions (https://secondchancenc.org/), who brought the joy of Oscar into Craig’s life.
