He is survived by his wife, Terri (Robinson), and his son, Noah. Darren is the son of the (late) Joseph (Sonny) Masier and the (late) Sue Schultz Masier. He is the adoptive son and nephew of Thomas A. Brown and Virginia (GG) Brown. He is further survived by his Aunt Linda Schultz Cuti, Uncle Frank Cuti, and his cousins, Linsey Cuti, Greg Cuti and Dolly Ford.
Darren’s first priority was always family, his wife, Terri, and his son, Noah, of whom he was so proud, particularly of his recent accomplishment of becoming a jet pilot. Darren and Terri, married for 29 years, shared the joys of traveling, athletics, outdoor activities, especially running and biking, and good restaurants.
They completed many races together, often with Terri in front. Darren always had a need for speed and adventure, including extreme hiking trails, motorcycles, snowmobiles, dirt bikes, and dune buggies. Darren loved his friends and extended family; valued his annual ice fishing trip and was never opposed to competitive penny sports betting.
Darren was a Professor of Organizational Development at Meredith College in Raleigh. He received his BA from Purdue University and his MA and PhD from North Carolina State University. He loved his profession as a teacher and a mentor. He started early by coaching little league baseball and soccer. Darren also spoke fluent Spanish and often taught classes online. His college students describe him as inspirational and truly vested in the success of each individual.
Darren had a quiet intelligence, steadfast faith, gentle kindness, and a contagious joy for life which touched everyone he met. His deep Christian faith guided every day and sustained him through his recent health challenges. Darren’s life had been extended about a year and a half through a bone marrow transplant which he barely survived.
During this time, he joyfully returned to teaching. Heartbreakingly, Darren developed a very aggressive complication in February of this year that took his life in three months. Darren passed peacefully surrounded by loved ones.
